For Meeting of: June 20, 2017 ITEM TITLE: Recognition of Rob Peterson, Airport Director, for being named 2017 Management Member of the Year by the Washington Airport Management Association SUBMITTED BY: Cliff Moore, City Manager SUMMARY EXPLANATION: The City of Yakima's Airport Director, Rob Peterson, was recently honored for his contributions to the airport manager profession by being named the 2017 Management Member of the Year by the Washington Airport Management Association ("WAMA"). Peterson was formally recognized and presented the award during WAMA's annual spring conference, which was held in Blaine, Washington in early May. "Rob is an outstanding representative of the airport manager profession and the City of Yakima is fortunate to have him as our Airport Director," said Yakima City Manager Cliff Moore. "It's wonderful that Rob's colleagues throughout Washington State appreciate the top-notch professional that he is and have recognized him with this prestigious award." Peterson began his career in the airport industry in 2001 after having graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in aviation management. His first job in the industry was as a Flight Operations Supervisor for Atlantic Coast Airlines, which operated as a regional connector airline from 1989 through 2006 under several corporate names. I n 2007, after having earned a master's degree in public administration in aviation from Southern Illinois University, Peterson was hired as an Aviation Operations Representative at Denver International Airport. Two years later, Peterson went to work as Airport Operations/Maintenance Supervisor for the Dayton (Ohio) International Airport. About a year after that, he went to Meacham International Airport in Fort Worth, Texas to serve as the Airport Operations Officer. I n 2011, Peterson was hired to be the Assistant Airport Manager in Yakima. About two years later, he was promoted to Airport Manager. Earlier this year, Peterson was again promoted, this time to Airport Director. Peterson has been actively involved in organizations that support the airport industry. He currently serves as the WAMA secretary. Peterson is also an adjunct instructor in the Aviation Department at Central Washington University. WAMA was founded in 1970 to promote improvement of airport management in Washington State. WAMA serves as the voice of its members, promoting and protecting the interests of Washington's airports and the public, pilots, and passengers it serves.
