PROCLAWATION
wfEREAS, on Ilay S, 1862, in the rural township of Pue6la.91e4co, a rugged untrained
and under-equipped small army of indigenous people, mostly farmers, defeated the invading French
Army, a weft armed professional force, that proved to 6e the catalyst which provided the indigenous
people of.Nle4co with confidence to persevere in ultimate triumph over the French in 1867; and
WEREAS, the people of.Nle.Vcan heritage have 6rought these same values of se f reliance
and determination to the vnitedStates, and more importantly to the Yakima valley; and
WiPEREAS, many.Yle4can/Latino/Vispanic community members have served valiantly
and courageously in the VS armed forces in defending our great nation, and contribute to the
community with little recognition or acknowledgement; and
WiPEREAS, the.1e4can/Latino/Vispanic community in Yakima has enriched the cultural
diversity in education, arts, and business and wishes to share their culture and strong family values
with the entire community for 6etter understanding of all cultures; and
WIPEREAS,festivals contri6ute to tourism as an important economic development tooffor
rural communities, and more specifically for downtown revitalization; and
WIPEREAS, the City of Yakima recognizes the cultural and economic contri6utions of the
.1e4can/Latino/Vispanic community; and
WIPEREAS, the.Ifispanic Chamber of Commerce of Yakima County supports the efforts of
the City of Yakima to enhance downtown 6y hosting the 16th Annual Cinco de Ilayo Cultural
Fiesta on Saturday and Sunday, Ilay 6, and 7, 2017, as well as other related activities throughout
the week.
NOW, WERETORE, I, Kathy Coffey, Mayor of the City of Yakima and on 6eha f of the
Yakima City Council; do hereby proclaim Ilay 1-7, 2017 as
CIWCO DE .VIA TO - Cultural-Awareness Week
in the City of Yakima and urge all citizens to join us in recognizing and participating in this cultural
event.
