ITEM TITLE: Resolution authorizing open cruising events to be held on June 10,
June 17, July 8, August 12, and September 9, 2017

SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
While "Cruising the Ave" is prohibited in the City of Yakima, Council does retain the ability to allow
open cruising events from time to time for the benefit of the public by passing a simple resolution
as noted in YMC 9.25.020. The second Saturday of June, July, August and September as well as
the third Saturday of June have been the traditional dates of open cruising for the last three
summers and have each been held with no incidents to report from the Yakima Police
Department. Three local organizations have requested June 10, June 17, July 8, August 12 and
September 9th as the official Cruise dates for 2017. The organization will still need to submit for a
Special Event Permit to complete the process.

RESOLUTION NO. R -2017-
A RESOLUTION authorizing open cruising events to be held on June 10, June 17,
July 8, August 12, and September 9, 2017.
WHEREAS, the City of Yakima ("City") has previously adopted ordinances
regulating cruising events, codified at Chapter 9.25 YMC; and
WHEREAS, various City of Yakima based organizations have requested cruising
events to be conducted on Yakima Avenue in 2017 from 6th Street to 7th Avenue, on the
specified Saturdays of June 10, June 17, July 8, August 12 and September 9, between
the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., to be open to the public and subject to the special
event provisions of Chapter 9.70 YMC; and
WHEREAS, YMC 9.25.020 provides that the City Council may approve open
cruise events from time to time pursuant to an adopted Resolution, subject to applicable
provisions of Chapter 9.70 YMC pertaining to special events; and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds and determines that approval of the proposed
open cruising events to be held June 10, June 17, July 8, August 12, September 9 as
described above, is in the best interests of residents of the City of Yakima and will
promote the general health, safety and welfare; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
The open cruising events requested by various City of Yakima based
organizations to be held between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, June
17, July 8, August 12 and September 9, 2017 on Yakima Avenue between 6th Street and
7th Avenue, is hereby approved, subject to and conditioned upon the applicant's
compliance with all applicable provisions of Chapter 9.70 YMC pertaining to special
events.
ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL this 21St day of March, 2017.
