A RESOLUTION relating to historic preservation; Adding the George Donald
House/Woman's Century Club, a property designated by the Yakima Historic
Preservation Commission under Chapter 11.62 of the City of Yakima Municipal
Code, to the Yakima Register of Historic Places; and imposing controls upon
construction, renovation and/or repair thereof.
WHEREAS, the Yakima Historic Preservation Ordinance For Special
Valuation, Chapter 11.62 of the Citylof Yakima Municipal Code, establishes a
procedure for the identification, designation, preservation and rehabilitation of
structures and areas having historical, cultural, architectural, archaeological
engineering or geographic importance; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 11.62 of the City of Yakima
Municipal Code, after public meeting held on December 14, 2005, the Yakima Historic
Preservation Commission voted to approve the nomination of the property described
below as a historic property, has transmitted its decision to the City Council for
consideration, and has recommended that the same be approved by the City Council;
and
WHEREAS it appears that the property reflects an outstanding example of the
City's cultural, artistic, social, architectural, and historic heritage, and such designation
would foster civic pride in the beauty and accomplishments of the past; that the
designation thereof would enhance the City's attraction to tourists and visitors; that the
use of the historic building for the education, appreciation , and welfare of the people
would be promoted, and the continued economic viability of the building would be
preserved; and
WHEREAS, based upon said findings, the Yakima City Council believes that it
would be in the best interest of the City to so designate the property described below
as a historic property and place it on the Yakima Register of Historic Places;
Now, Therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
Section 1. DESIGNATION. That, pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 11.62 of the
City of Yakima Municipal Code, the Yakima City Council approves the designation of
the following property as a historic property and places said property on the Yakima
Register of Historic Places:

LEGAL DESCRIPTION: Section 19 Township 13 Range 19 , Yakima lots 1,2 & 3,
Block 27 in Yakima, Washington
PARCEL NUMBER: 1 91 31 9-22421
Is designated as a historic landmark based upon its satisfaction of the following
standards of YMC 11.62.045(A):

(1) Is associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the
broad patterns of national, state,,or local history;
(2) Embodies the distinctive architectural characteristics of a type, period, style,
or method of design or construction, or represents a significant and
distinguishable entity whose components may lack individual distinction;
(3) Is an outstanding work of a designer, builder, or architect who has made a
substantial contribution to the art;
(4) Exemplifies or reflects special elements of Yakima's cultural, special,
economic, political, aesthetic, engineering, or architectural history;
(5) Is associated with the lives of persons significant in national, state, or local
history.
SECTION 2. CONSTRUCTION, RESTORATION AND REPAIR. Prior to the
commencement of any construction,'restoration and/or repair work on a property
listed on the Yakima Register of Historic Places, excluding ordinary repair and
maintenance and emergency measures, as those terms are defined in YMC Section
11.62.030, the owner shall request and receive a Certificate of Appropriateness from
the Historic Preservation Commission for the proposed work pursuant to YMC Section
11.62.045D, and shall comply with the provisions of YMC Section 11.62.050 when
prosecuting said work. Any violations of these requirements shall be grounds for the
Commission to review the property for possible removal from the Yakima Register of
Historic Places.

SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
In a public meeting held before the Yakima City Council on January 17, 2006, preliminary
approval was granted to the designation of the George Donald House/Woman's Century Club to
the Yakima Register of Historic Places. Staff requests that Council formally adopt the resolution
granting the Historic Preservation Commission's recommendation for designation of the George
Donald House as a historic property and place said property on the Yakima Register of Historic
Places..
On December 14, 2005 the Historic Preservation Commission issued a written recommendation
for approval of this application nominating the George Donald House to the Yakima Register of
Historic Places. Today you are being requested to formally adopt the resolution granting
approval.
