For Meeting of: January 17, 2017 ITEM TITLE: Resolution declaring Yakima as a Welcoming City SUBMITTED BY: Cliff Moore, City Manager SUMMARY EXPLANATION: At the regular City Council business meeting on January 10, 2017, the Council directed the City Attorney's office to present a draft of a Resolution declaring the City of Yakima a, "Welcoming City," for council's consideration. The attached draft Resolution, if adopted, would declare the City of Yakima a, "Welcoming City," that respects and welcomes all people. The resolution also states that City employees will serve all residents and all city services will accessible to all residents and directs City staff will continue to assist the City Council in communicating these values on behalf of the City. R -2017- A RESOLUTION of the City Council of the City of Yakima, Washington, declaring the City of Yakima a Welcoming City for all people. WHEREAS, the City of Yakima is committed to protecting and serving everyone who resides in, works in or visits the City of Yakima without discrimination based on race, religion, color, national origin, immigration status, sex, age, income or economic status, political affiliation, military status, sexual orientation, or physical, mental or sensory ability; and WHEREAS, the City of Yakima believes in the dignity, equality and constitutional and civil rights of all people, and will not tolerate hate, intolerance, discrimination, harassment or any behavior that creates fear, isolation or intimidation; and WHEREAS, one of the City's mission and vision statements is to create a culturally diverse, economically vibrant, safe, and strong Yakima community for all city residents; and WHEREAS, the City of Yakima's vibrancy and sense of community are stronger for our diversity and shared values of acceptance and respect; and WHEREAS, the Yakima City Council supports these principles and strives to reflect them in their actions as Yakima's elected leaders; and WHEREAS, City of Yakima employees also support these principles and strive to embody these ideals every day as they provide critical services such as police, fire, parks, public works, public transportation and much more in an inclusive and equitable manner to all residents, visitors and businesses in the City of Yakima; now, therefore: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA: Section 1. The City of Yakima is declared a, "Welcoming City," deeply committed to promoting a just society that respects and welcomes all people; and Section 2. As a Welcoming City, City employees will serve all residents, and City services will be accessible to all residents regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, immigration status, sex, age, income or economic status, political affiliation, military status, sexual orientation, or physical, mental or sensory ability; and Section 3. City staff will continue to assist the City Council in communicating these values on behalf of the City. ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL this 17th day of January, 2017.
