A RESOLUTION authorizing the City Council to formally adopt the 1996 Yakima
CorePlan as the action policy planning document for Downtown Yakima and
thereby directing that the 1996 Yakima CorePlan be referred to as part of the
overall Yakima Urban Area Comprehensive Plan.
WHEREAS, Downtown Yakima serves the entire Central Washington region as
a hub for business and retail activities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Yakima and its citizens have consistently and
progressively planned for their downtown area since 1965; and
WHEREAS, the 1996 Yakima CorePlan continues this tradition of addressing
the needs of the City by examining the current state of Downtown and establishing a
set of policies that will escort downtown development into the next century, and
WHEREAS, this planning document could not have been accomplished without
the prominent support and assistance of the downtown business community, their
respective commerce associations, and 452 citizen and Yakima Valley participants;
and
WHEREAS, letters of endorsement were received from the Downtown Area
Redevelopment Committee, the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce, the North
Front Street Improvement Association, and the Westside Merchants Association, and
WHEREAS, a well planned and sustainable Downtown embodies the strength
and vitality of the entire city, and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the City of Yakima that the 1996 Yakima
CorePlan be adopted as the action planning policy document for the downtown area
of the City of Yakima, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
The 1996 Yakima CorePlan is hereby adopted as the action policy planning
document for Downtown Yakima. Staff is directed to refer to the Yakima CorePlan as
part of the Yakima Urban Area Comprehensive Plan. Furthermore, staff is directed to
review the Yakima CorePlan policies, in collaboration with the downtown business
community on an annual basis, and to host an extensive public participation process
on a five year cycle, to conduct significant plan revisions.
ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL this 7th day of May, 1996.

At the regularly scheduled meeting, of April 16, 1996, the City Council approved and
directed staff to prepare the adopting resolution for the 1996 Yakima CorePlan. The
attached resolution meets the direction of the City Council.
