Item No. 4.A.
For Meeting of: November 1, 2016
ITEM TITLE: 2015 All- America City Quilt Display
SUBMITTED BY: Randy Beehler, Communications & Public Affairs Director
SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
Each of the cities that participated in the 2015 "All- America City Award" competition in Denver,
Colorado created handmade textile panels, which were combined to make a unique quilt, which is
currently on display in the 1st -floor lobby at Yakima City Hall. Yakima's panel is the second one
from the left in the top row and was made by local artist Nancy Rayner.
The National Civic League has sponsored the "All- America City Award" program for nearly 70
years. The "All- America City Award" is the oldest community recognition program in the U.S. The
award honors community members who work together to identify and tackle tough local
challenges (like crime, poverty, lack of educational opportunities, etc.) and achieve uncommon
results.
Yakima has won the "All- America City Award" twice — the first time in 1994 and the second time in
2015. This quilt has traveled or will travel to each of the communities that participated in the
program in 2015.
