`GtIELAS, `Yakima's first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires
and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and
WJFEREAS, 84% of all v.S. fire deaths occur in the home; and
WtEAS, working smoke alarms cut the riskof dying in reported home fires in half, and
WtEAS, in one -fifth of ail homes with smoke alarms, the smoke alarms are not working;
and
WiltEREAS, all smoke alarms should be replaced at least once eveiy ten years; and
WiltEREAS, the age of a smoke alarm can be determined by the date of its manufacture,
which is marked on the 6ackof smoke alarms; and
�Y'3IEREAS, the National ¶Fire Prevention Week theme for 2016 is "Don't Wait — Check the
Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years" effectively serves to educate the public about the vital
importance of replacing smoke alarms eveiy ten years, and to determine the age of their smoke alarms
by checking the date of manufacture on the 6ackof the alarms.
NOW, 1IEWEEORE, I, Kathy Coffey, U'tayor of the City of Yakima, and on behalf of the
City Council, do hereby proclaim the weekof October 9 -15, 2016 as
" FIDE PREVENTION WEEK
andI urge the people of 'Yakima to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work and school
and to heed the message: "Don't Wait — Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years" as
the 2016 Fire Prevention Weektheme
suggests.
This week commemorates the great Chicago ¶Fire of 1871, which kilted 250 persons, left
100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings.
