Tuesday, August 30, 2016 12 18 AM To City Council Cc Beehler, Randy; Claar Tee, Sonya, Moore, Cliff; Claar Tee, Sonya Subject: 2017 -2018 Legislative and Administrative Priorities Dear City Council Members Yakima Bikes and Walks (YBAW) offers three comments for consideration at your August 30 meeting concerning 2017 -2018 State and Federal Legislative and Administrative Priorities 1 YBAW heartily endorses adding "Safe Routes to School funding" to the City's actively pursue list. Over past years, Yakima has been successful in utilizing this program to improve pedestrian enviromnents in the City, and many more improvements are still needed. 2 Please consider also adding the "WSDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Grant program" to the City's priorities Similarly to Safe Routes to School, this grant program could help to fund infrastructure improvements for bicycling and walking in Yakima, including to implement the City's future Bicycle Master Plan. 3 Finally, for the boost to Central Washington tourism that it would provide, we ask you to consider adding "support for the cross -state John Wayne Pioneer Trail" This trail (currently only half - built) will run from North Bend to Tekoa (at the Idaho border) It follows an abandoned railroad corridor purchased by the state in the 1980's and passes through Ellensburg and the Yakima Training Center There is currently a push by many local governments to support the trail's construction following the 2016 legislature's direction to the State Parks Department to develop a trail management plan for the trail's undeveloped eastern half. As of August 29, the following 30 cities have passed resolutions of support for the John Wayne Pioneer Trail http.//www.friendsofjol • RITZVILLE • TEKOA • PULLMAN • SPOKANE • CLE ELUM • SOUTH CLE ELUM • ROYAL CITY • ROSALIA • GARFIELD • OAKSDALE • GIG HARBOR • KITTITAS • WARDEN • EGEWOOD • GRANITE FALLS • ROCKFORD • MOSES LAKE • LIND i • LATAH • BUCKLEY • BAINBRIDGE ISLAND • PALOUSE • ELLENSBURG • COLFAX • FAIRFIELD • ROSYLN • CHENEY • OMAK • PORT TOWNSEND • SEQUIM Thanks for this opportunity to provide our input. The mission of Yakima Bikes and Walks is "to create a safer and friendlier community in which to bicycle and walk." - -Phil Hoge » » » >> » » » » » » >> >> Yakima Bikes and Walks! hops. / /wwtiN.facebook.com.`Y akimaBikes YBAW's Calendar blips.// www-. e oogle.com, calendar einbed ?src Yakima.bikes%40gmail.com&.ctc America."LosAnc *eles YBAW's website ww , .vakimabikesandwalks.oriz 2
