Subject: Recommendation for Appointment of a City Council Member to AWC
Legislative Priorities Committee
Date: Wednesday, June 15th, 2016
Council members,
The Association of Washington Cities ( "AWC ") has requested a member of the Yakima City
Council be recommended for appointment to its Legislative Priorities Committee. The
committee, which is comprised of about 40 elected and appointed city officials from throughout
the state, meets several times a year (in person or by conference call) to determine which state
legislative priorities it will recommend be adopted by the AWC Board of Directors. For the last
several years, Councilmember Kathy Coffey has served on the committee.
Committee members serve two -year terms. Committee members appointed now will serve from
June 2016 through June 2018.
Were the Yakima City Council to recommend one of its members for appointment to the
committee, that recommendation would be provided to the AWC President for his consideration.
Several Yakima City Council members have served on AWC committees and as part of AWC
leadership over the years. Those Council members have helped to shape the policy and
direction of the organization as it has developed its wide array of services that are provided to its
membership, which has consistently included all cities and towns (currently numbering 281) in
Washington State. The educational training, publications and other resources, technical
assistance, legislative advocacy, and member programs provided by the AWC combine to give
the City of Yakima and the other cities and towns in Washington State tools, information, and
knowledge necessary to deliver services to citizens as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Please let me know if you have any questions prior to the Council's June 21St business meeting
about the request from the AWC for a Yakima City Council member to be recommended for
appointment to the AWC Legislative Priorities Committee.
