For Meeting of: January 7, 2025 ITEM TITLE: Draft Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Proclamation SUBMITTED BY: Vicki Baker, City Manager SUMMARY EXPLANATION: OIC of Washington requested a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service proclamation. If approved, the proclamation will be read and presented at the January 14th City Council meeting. For over 30 years, the Yakima Community MLK Planning Group has come together to celebrate MLK, Jr. through a series of community events including the MLK, Jr. Peace Walk and program at the Yakima Convention Center. ITEM BUDGETED: N/A STRATEGIC PRIORITY 24-25: RECOMMENDATION: ATTACHMENTS: 2025 MLK Proclamation.docx 4 CITY OE TAKIIIA R,OC A *A T I 0 .9‘r wawa,S, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. devoted his fife to advancing equality, social- justice, and opportunity for aft, and challenged everyone to participate in the never-ending workof building a more perfect union; and WHERAS, Dr. King's teachings can continue to guide and inspire us in addressing challenges in our communities, and the King.Jfolulay and Service Act, enacted in 1994, designated the King.Jfol day as a national day of a volunteer service; and z'LE ASS, since 1994, millions of Americans have been in w 6y the life and workof Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to serve their neighbors and communities on t Xing.Jfolulay, and serving on the King.Jfol day is an appropriate way to honor Dr. King, meet 1 and national- needs, bring everyone together while strengthening our communities and nation; and z'LEASS, the King Day of Service is the only federal holiday commemorated as a rational Day of Service, and offers an opportunity for everyone to give back to their communities and make an ongoing commitment to service throughout the year, and WRIEWS, King Day of Service projects are being olzinized 6y a wide range of nonprofits and community organizations, educational institutions,public agencies, private businesses, and other organizations across the nation; and WHERAS, each of us can and must contribute to making our communities better with increased opportunity for all and have the opportunity to participate in events throughout our city on the King Day of Service, January 20th, 2025, WOW`MEREEORE, I, Patricia Byers, Mayor of the City of(Yakima and on behalf of the (Yakima City Council do hereby proclaim the Martin Luther King Jr. Ifoli iay as a DA'YOf SERVICE and call upon the people of(Yakima to pay tribute to the fife and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through participation in community service projects on Martin Luther King Day and throughout the year, "Don't Give Vp on the Dream, Keep.Mope Alive': Dated this 14th day of January, 2025 Patricia Byers, Mayor 5
