ITEM TITLE: Staff Sergeant Jack J. Pendleton Day proclamation

SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
At the October 1, 2024 City Council meeting, the City Council reviewed a draft copy of a proclamation
proclaiming October 12th as Staff Sergeant Jack J. Pendleton Day in the City of Yakima.
Attached is the proclamation that will be accepted by Commander Tim Gatton, VFW Post 379.

WJ1!E 4, on October 12th, 1944, while serving with the VS.Army's Company I,
120th Infantry, 30th Infantry Division, Staff Sergeant Jack J. Pendleton tookenemy gunfire
and was gravely wounded in his leg while leading his squad in an attackon a German machine
gun nest near Barden6erg, Germany; and
W.I1ERMS, despite his injuries, Staff Sergeant Pendleton ordered his troops to stay
where they were and, using a supply of hand grenades, slowly advanced alone to within ten
yards of the enemy position, all the while drawing a hail of machine gun fire to himself and
away from his squad and other soldiers; and
W.I1EREAS, with the enemy gunners'attention focused on Staff Sergeant Pendleton,
troops from his squad assisted another squad in taking out the German machine gun nest,
allowing the entire company to advance and complete its mission during a critical-phase of the
war; and
W3fERMS, Staff Sergeant Pendleton succumbed to the injuries he suffered during the
battle; and
W3fERMS, Staff Sergeant Pendleton was posthumously presented the Medal of
.Ifonor, the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can 6e bestowed on
an individual serving in the Armed Forces of the united States,for his heroic actions during
World War II in Germany.; and
W3fERMS, Staff Sergeant Pendleton is (Yakima's only Medal of Ifonor recipient,
NOW TffEREEORE, I, Patricia Byers, Mayor of the City of(Yakima and on behalf of
the entire (Yakima City Council, the (Yakima community, and a grateful-nation, do hereby
declare October 12th, 2024, the 80th anniversary of Staff Sergeant Pendleton's unparalleled
