Subject: Mission & Vision /Strategic Priorities Draft Revisions
Date: March 13, 2008
Mayor Edler and City Council Members,
At its January 26 retreat and follow -up February 19 study session, the City Council directed its
Mission & Vision /Strategic Priorities Committee to work on revisions to the City's Mission
Statement and Vision Statement, and the Council's Strategic Direction Priorities. Draft revised
versions of the three documents are attached. The committee asked for the draft revised
versions to be included in this Council packet anticipating discussion by the full Council at its
March 18 business meeting.
The revised Mission Statement and Vision Statement differ from the existing versions both in
content and concept. The existing Vision Statement is quite broad and includes task - oriented
elements. By comparison, the revised Vision Statement is a simple, memorable description of
the City's long -term goals. While the existing Mission Statement focuses more on
programmatic and operational priorities, the reworked version uses broader themes to express
0 the City's central values and principles.
The committee redesigned the Council's Strategic Direction Priorities to make them more .
effective as tools for establishing policy and gauging staff progress in meeting Council
directives. Appropriately, the revised priorities have been retitled Strategic "Policy" Priorities.
Individual priority titles have also been reworded and do not include definitions like the existing
•
priorities do. Instead, specific task - oriented bullets, which still need to be developed, will be
listed under each individual priority.
The revised Vision Statement and Mission Statement are intended to require less frequent
modification than the current versions have. On the other hand, by regularly updating its
Strategic Policy Priorities (perhaps every two years), the Council will provide targeted guidance
as circumstances evolve and City resources need to be refocused.
Please contact either of us if you have any questions or have feedback to provide prior to the
March 18 Council meeting.
