For Meeting of: August 20, 2024 ITEM TITLE: Draft Trolley Week proclamation SUBMITTED BY: Vicki Baker, City Manager SUMMARY EXPLANATION: Ken Johnsen, President of Yakima Valley Trolleys, submitted a proclamation request asking the Council to proclaim the week of August 25-31 as Yakima Valley Trolley Week. Attached is a draft copy of the proclamation. If approved by Council, the proclamation will be read and presented at the August 27 meeting. ITEM BUDGETED: N/A STRATEGIC PRIORITY 24-25: A Thriving Yakima RECOMMENDATION: Approve proclamation ATTACHMENTS: 2024 Yakima Valley Trolley Week.doc 8 CFIT OF TAKIllfq � R.O C L A CVO T I O Ar 'NlE4, `Yakima's early founders acted with vision and foresight to construct an interurban electric railway which stitched together the communities of the Yakima Valley; and WWfE AS, the Yakima valley Transportation Company railway brought tremendous prosperity to the region, serving as the starting point for agriculture and other goods to reach global-markets; and WfE AS, the interurban electric railway multiplied the social, economic, and educational opportunities for all people of this Valley; and WfE IS, `Yakima was the last city to have streetcar service in Washington State; and WifE AS, this very City Council body, led by council member Wray gown, in 1974 pursued an ambitious plan to restore that streetcar service;and W7fE AS, interurbans like the'MT were once commonplace in America and now there is only one; and WMEIWIS, the National Bark Service has found the railway to be a good candidate for designation as a SNational.7fistoric Landmark and W7fE AS, `Yakima's trolleys serve as an international draw for tourism; and W4ftE AS, the trolleys have the potential to catalyze future economic development and tourism as a connector of the community; and WfE AS, generations of families have fond memories riding the trolleys; and WIPEIWIS, this August the 28th marks 50 years since the arrival of the two trolleys #1776 and #1976 which restored Yakima s streetcar service. NOW, 2 fE TFOE, I, 'Patricia Byers 9blayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim the weekof August 25 through August 31St as "'Yakima Valley c rolZey Week" throughout the City of Yakima and encourage all residents to enjoy this unique part of our heritage and think about the future of'Yakima's historic interurban electric railway. 9 Dated this 27th day of August, 2024 'Patricia(Byers, Mayor ISO 10
