WHEREAS, supporting the development of additional housing is a Yakima City Council priority; and WHEREAS, due to a proposed Yakima Housing Authority project it is necessary to change Lewis Avenue to a one-way southbound street between West Lincoln and Folsom to provide a safer environment for pedestrians and vehicle traffic; and WHEREAS, changing Lewis Avenue to a one-way street southbound will provide a safer traffic pattern around the adjacent housing development; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Yakima finds that it is in the best interests of the City and its residents to amend the municipal code to make Lewis Avenue a one-way street between West Lincoln and Folsom; now, therefore, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF YAKIMA: Section 1. Chapter 9.50.290 of the Yakima Municipal Code is hereby amended to read as set forth in Exhibit "A" attached hereto and incorporated herein Section 2. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect 30 days after its passage, approval, and publication as provided by law and by the City Charter. For Meeting of: July 16, 2024 ITEM TITLE: Ordinance amending Yakima Municipal Code 9.50.290 - One-way Streets and Alleys for Lewis Avenue SUBMITTED BY: Scott Schafer, Public Works Director * Bill Preston, City Engineer SUMMARY EXPLANATION: Recent housing developments in the area prompted City Engineering to perform a traffic analysis along Lewis Street between West Lincoln and Folsom. Traffic data warrants changing the street south bound to one way. Lewis street is very narrow and does not have sidewalks. Justice Housing, the developer in the area is also required to install sidewalks along their Lewis Street frontage. Making it one way southbound will increase the safety of vehicles and pedestrians.
