MISSION & VISION /STRATEGIC PRIORITIES COMMITTEE
Thursday, April 17, 2008
2:00 — 3:00 p.m.
City Manager's Conference Room, 1St Floor, City Hall
Council Members
Kathy Coffey - Chair
Dave Edler
Micah Cawley
The meeting convened at 2:00 pm.
Staff
Dick Zais, City Manager
Dave Zabell, Asst. City Manager
Randy Beehler, Community Relations Mgr.
Debbie Moore, City Clerk
Agenda
1. Review Updated City of Yakima Priorities Report
Randy Beehler informed the committee that tasks, projects, initiatives, etc. that
were listed in a previous report provided to the Council prior to its January retreat
had been reorganized in the updated report to better correspond with the Council's
recently - adopted, revised Strategic Priorities. Beehler noted that the updated
report represents a "snap shot in time" and will be revised regularly as projects are
completed, new tasks emerge, and situations evolve. The next scheduled update
of the document to be presented to the full Council will be in the form of the annual
"Progress Report on Council Strategic Priorities" which will be completed in mid to
late summer of this year.
Kathy Coffey suggested a few minor revisions to the updated report, which the
other committee members agreed to. The full committee also agreed with Coffey's
suggestion that items without committee assignments be listed last under each
Strategic Priority.
Dick Zais noted that Strategic Priorities reports provide a "road map" for City staff to
follow when designing work plans and allocating resources.
Dave Edler. said Strategic Priorities reports also serve as "report cards" on both the
progress of Council and City staff in meeting measurable goals.
Committee Action: Coffey moved the committee forward a "Do Pass"
recommendation to the full Council to:
- Accept the updated Strategic Priorities Report.
The motion was seconded by Edler.
0 Vote: 3 -0 in favor of motion.
2. Discuss Any Necessary Additional Strategic Priorities Development
The committee determined that no additional development of the revised Council
Strategic Priorities is necessary at this time. The adopted Strategic Priorities will
be reviewed in 2010.
3. Other Business
1) Debbie Moore asked for direction re: inclusion of the City Mission Statement
and /or Vision Statement on City letterhead and other documents. Moore noted that
past practice had been to include the Mission Statement, however given recent
revisions adopted by the Council, including the Vision Statement may be more
appropriate.
Committee Action: Coffey moved that the newly- adopted City Vision Statement be
included on City letterhead and other similar documents.
The motion was seconded by Edler.
Vote: 3 -0 in favor of motion.
2) Coffey requested that the City have "Thank You" notes printed which could be
used by Council members and staff. Coffey suggested that the notes include the
City logo and City Vision Statement. The other committee members agreed and
directed staff to have "Thank You" notes printed.
The meeting adjourned at 2:41 p.m.

To: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
From: City Manager Dick Zais'
Community Relations Manager Randy Beehler
Subject: Updated Strategic Priorities Report
Date: May 1, 2008
Mayor Edler and City Council Members,
The Council Mission & Vision /Strategic Priorities Committee (Coffey, Edler, Cawley) has
completed development and review of a report summarizing and prioritizing current major City
tasks, projects, initiatives, etc. The updated Strategic Priorities Report (attached) is similar to a
report provided to the Council prior to its January retreat. Tasks, projects, etc. from the
previous report have been reorganized to coincide with the Council's recently- adopted, revised
Strategic Priorities. As indicated in the updated report, each item has also been assigned to a
Council committee, staff, or other committee, task force, etc.
The Strategic Priorities Report forms the foundation for the more comprehensive Progress
Report on City Council Strategic Priorities which will be submitted to the Council in mid to late
summer. The Progress Report provides greater detail about significant accomplishments of the
City over the previous 12 to 18 months. The Progress Report will be submitted to the City
Council prior to its annual City Manager performance review.
At its meeting on April 16, the Council Mission & Vision /Strategic Priorities Committee voted 3 -0
to forward a Do Pass recommendation to the full Council to accept the updated Strategic
Priorities Report.
Please contact either of us if you have any questions or have feedback to provide prior to the
May 6 Council meeting.
