For Meeting of: May 21, 2024 ITEM TITLE: Draft Pride Month proclamation SUBMITTED BY: Dave Zabel!, Interim City Manager SUMMARY EXPLANATION: On May 8, 2024, Joshua Hastings submitted a proclamation request on behalf of Yakima Pride requesting that the Council proclaim the month of June 2024 as Pride Month. Attached for Council consideration is a draft copy of the proclamation. If approved, the proclamation will be read and presented at the June 4 City Council meeting. The intent of the proclamation is to support for the LGBTQ community by encouraging all residents to join in commemorating diversity, fostering inclusion, and advocating for equal protection under the law. ITEM BUDGETED: STRATEGIC PRIORITY: APPROVED FOR SUBMITTAL BY THE CITY MANAGER RECOMMENDATION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Upload Date Type D Draft Pride Month proclamation 2 CITY OF YAKIMA PROCLAMATION WES,June is recognized as Lesbian, Gay, Bisevtal, 7ransgender,Ase.pal, Aromantic, Queer, 'Two-Spirit, Non-Binary, and Intersec+Pride'tonth, and the plus reflects the countless affirmative ways in which people choose to self-identib; and W ES, the historic Stonewall uprising of 1969 stands as a cornerstone of the LGB7Q+ Fights 34ovement, reminding us that progress and equality are achieved through unwavering determination, resilience and collective action; and CLEWS, the City of'Yakima values the diversity of its residents, including those within the LGB7Q2S+ community and acknowledges the ongoing struggles they face; and WHEREAS, Yakima, resting on the ancestral lands of the fourteen Confederated Tribes and Bands of the'Yakama Nation, acknowledges and respects the resilience and cultural significance of Native American'Two-Spirit people, who historically occupieda distinct, alternative gender status within their Tribes; and `G1 HEWS, `Yakima acknowledges the challenges faced by'Two-Spirit individuals and celebrates their ongoing efforts to reclaim and revitalize their traditions and practices; and WEWS, the City of'Yakima is committed to fostering a culture of respect, support, andinclusivity, ensuring that LGB7Q2S+individuals can live authentically,feel secure, and thrive free from discrimination; and WHEREAS, the City of'Yakima proudly honors the contributions and achievements of the LGB7Q2S+ community, recognizing their pivotal roles in shaping the vibrant history and culture of Yakima. NOW, giFERETORE, I, Patricia Byers, U'tayorof the City of Yakima, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of June 2024 as "LGOTQ2S+ bride JVlonth" in the City of Yakima and encourage all residents to join in commemorating diversity,fostering inclusion, and advocating for equal-protection under the law. Let us unite in our commitment to eradicate prejudice and discriminatory practices, ensuring that all cultures, races, and groups are treated with dignity and respect.
