1E ., S, adequate housing is essentialfor healthy communities; and
WI—PEWS, winter poses a hardship to the 560 people experiencing homelessness in
this year's Point in Time count in Yakima County, —189 of them surviving unsheltered, and
371 staying in emergency shelters; and
LEE.,7S, at least 60 individuals in our community are known to have died this year
who have lived without a permanent, safe place to call home as well as those unknown to us
who have died too soon because of the experience of homelessness; and
HEWS, December 21st is National.Ifomeless Persons'Memorial Day as
designated 6y the National Coalition for the.Ifomeless and the National Health Care for the
.Ifomeless Council and
`r4 EE E.4S, in recognition of the special challenges and trauma the pandemic has
presented to communities nationwide this year, residents of Yakima are encouraged to promote
compassion am!generosity for all people, especially the poor and the homeless.
NOW DPEKETOla, I Janice Deccio, Mayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf of
the City Council, do hereby proclaim Thursday, December21st, 2023 as

in the City of Yakima and askall residents to take a moment of silence in remembrance of those
who passedfrom ailments or conditions related to homelessness and encourage support for local
efforts to eliminate homelessness in our community.
