Regarding: Jean Stotts Citizen Complaint from 9/2/08 Council Meeting
At the September 2, 2008 City Council Meeting, Ms. Stotts expressed her concern over
the vacant properties purchased by the local service clubs, along Fair Avenue and
adjacent to Kiwanis Park on the north. Those properties have recently been signed over
to the City of Yakima for the expansion of Kiwanis Park.
Ms. Stotts also expressed her concern over a burnt house (apartment building) at 6th
Street and E. Walnut. The building is actually located at the corner of Naches Avenue
and E. Walnut Street and is addressed as 201 S. Naches Avenue. The asbestos survey has
been completed with the asbestos abatement scheduled for September 12, 2008, and
demolition is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2008.
In addition, Ms. Stotts noted in her remarks a concern that many sidewalks are in poor
repair. In Yakima, as in most cities in the State of Washington, adjoining property
owners are responsible for maintaining the condition of sidewalks. However, the process
to require property owners to fix sidewalks and be lengthy and is very cumbersome. The
City has limited funds to repair serious sidewalk safety issues and in some cases cost -
share the repair work with the property owner.
