Attached is a draft copy of an Arbor Day proclamation. If approved, the proclamation will be read
and presented at the April 4th Council meeting.

Agriculture that a special-day 6e set aside for the planting of trees and the holiday,
Arbor Day; and
WOEREAS,Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than a
million trees in Nebraska andis now observed through the nation and the world, and
WJ-PER,EAS, the (Yakima Area Arboretum, in 2000, established the Arbor
Festiva[to encourage an appreciation for trees and nature in the (Yakima area and it has
grown to one of the largest Arbor Day festivau.in the Pacific Northwest; and
WRIEKEAS, trees can Cower our heating and cooling costs, moderate the
temperature, clean the air,produce oxygen, andprovide habitat for wi&d41e; and

vitality of business areas, and beaut61 our community — trees are a source of joy and
spiritual-renewal
NOW 2IE1UEOU, I, Janice Deccio, Mayor of the City of(Yakima and on
behalf of the City Council hereby proclaim the third Saturday in April as

in the City of(Yakima and recognize the (Yakima Area Arboretum's Arbor'Festival as the
City's officialcele6ration. The City of(Yakima encourages air citizens to plant and care
for trees to promote the welt-being of this andfuture generations.
