CITY OF YAKIMA, WASHINGTON
ADJOURNED MEETING
1. LUNCHEON MEETING WITH YAKIMA HERALD REPUBLIC STAFF MEMBERS
The City Council met in session on this date at 12:00 Noon at the
Yakima Herald Republic Office, 104 No. 4th Street, Yakima,
Washington. Mayor Pat Berndt, presiding, Council members Lynn
Buchanan, George Pechtel, Skip Semon and Bernard Sims present on
roll call. Council members Clarence Barnett and Henry Beauchamp
absent and excused. City Manager Zais and Yakima Herald staff
members Jim Barnhill, Bill Lee, Dan Coleman, Spencer Hatton and
Mark Walker.
There was general discussion among the Council members with the
Yakima Herald - Republic Editorial Board regarding the proposed
visioning process for the City and the future of the community.
Other subjects discussed included the proposed transit transfer
facility and site options being evaluated by the Transit Committee
with downtown business people and dialogue about transportation
issues in general. The Herald - Republic was informed that it was
Council's intent to hold meetings like this at least once or twice
a year with themselves and other members of the media, particularly
to focus on major issues that need some clarification or further
input, such as the downtown studies which are now under
consideration. There was a major discussion regarding the regional
mall proposal versus expansion of the downtown mall, and pro and
con opinions were expressed by Council members, as well as members
of the Herald - Republic Editorial Board staff. There was a fairly
lengthy discussion regarding the City's law and justice needs and
concerns for obtaining new financial resources from the State and
Federal governments, particularly in light of the April 2nd
adjournment of the Legislature without acting on this issue.
The meeting adjourned at the hour of 1:37 P.M.
