PRESENTATION OF 1988 CAPITOL THEATRE YEAR -END REPORT Following the luncheon, Steve Caffery reviewed the 1988 year -end • Capitol Theatre report. He reviewed the background information given in the report, stating it is important to know the Capitol Theatre is a community driven facility. In the Pacific Northwest there are only two other facilities like the Capitol Theatre and they are The Pantages in Tacoma and The Washington Center in Olympia. He stated the Theatre operates as an independent agent, sponsoring events "at risk ", as well as accommodating the professional promoters and local and resident events. He said the average cost of an event sponsored "at risk" is $24,500 for direct, out -of- pocket expenses. He reported the Theatre sponsored ten "at risk" events last year. Mr. Caffery read the mission of the Capitol Theatre Committee, which is, "a city's vitality is measured in part, by its ability to deliver a comprehensive range of opportunities — recreational, educational, and cultural — to its citizenry. That The Capitol Theatre can fulfill its mission to provide otherwise unavailable opportunities invariably involved presenting "At Risk" programming. It is the Mission of The Capitol Threatre Committee to provide community trusteeship in managing the facility and create an atmosphere of accessibility for users and patrons -- including a variety of programming." Mr. Caffery reviewed several graphs, depicting 1988 -1989 Areas of Expense ($499,990); 1988 -1989 Sources of Revenue ($513,650); Compounded Percent of Change; Annual Attendance by Classification; and Number of Facility Use Days. Mr. Caffery responded to questions regarding the annual fund drive revenue, marketing of events, and audience composition. Mr. Caffery commented the national statistics indicate 1% of the people will attend an event per year; in Yakima that would be 1500 people. He reported about 60,000 people attended events at the Capitol Theatre. Mr. Caffery spoke about the methods to decrease the operating deficit of $51,473 which occurred in 1988. He said there has been a 26% reduction in General and Administrative expenses; a 16% reductions in Operating Expenses; a 56% increase in Series Ticket sales, a 6% increase in Facility Rentals and $43,800 was raised in one -time gifts and grants. There was a $10,041 accumulated surplus as of June 1987 and a $13,660 operating surplus as of June 30, 1989, leaving an $27,772 accumulated deficit as of June 30, 1989. City Manager Zais suggested Mr. Caffery approach the School District to participate in the Capitol Theatre's management fees. This suggestion resulted in a discussion about the programs at the Theatre the students attend. He said they received a $15,000 grant AAD /1 • cP./ -2- to sponsor students, which in the past = %was aria out -of- pocket expense for the Theatre. Mr. Caffery closed his remarks by commenting that he has been here for two - and -d= half'+ year's= -and Council should know the Capitol Theatre should not be here. He said it is only through the support given by the community that it continues to exist. The meeting was adjourned at the ho - - of 1:40 P.M.
