For Meeting of:April 12, 2022 ITEM TITLE: Martin Luther King Jr. Park Community Swimming Pool SUBMITTED BY: Ken Wilkinson, Parks & Recreation Manager 509 576 6416 SUMMARY EXPLANATION: In 2005, the City of Yakima closed the swimming pool at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. In 2017, at the direction of Yakima City Council, a committee was formed to study the options for a community swimming pool in east Yakima. City Council chose Martin Luther King Jr. Park as the preferred location for the pool. A feasibility study was conducted and completed in 2019. Three options for a swimming pool were created by the consultant based on the work conducted by the committee and ranged in price from $8 to $13 million. A funding request was made to the Washington State Legislative Capital Budget and was approved. The request was for$1 million to pay for creation of the plans, specifications and bid documents for the construction of a community swimming pool. The City will be including in its 2023 budget$3 million in capital costs for the pool. The 2023 budget will be reviewed with Council beginning in October 2022.
