AN ORDINANCE requiring permit issued by the Fire Marshal for the installation, mainten-
ance or use of gas appliances and piping; adopting by reference the "Ameri-
can Standard Installation of Gas Piping and Gas Appliances in Buildings ",
1954 edition, subject to certain exceptions and amendments thereof, "Ameri-
can Standard Requirements for Installation of Gas Equipment in Large Boil -
ers ", 1950 edition, (approved by the American Standards Association),`
"Standards of the National Board of Fire, Underwriters for the Storage and
Handling of Liquified Petroleum Gases ", 1954 edition, (as recommended by the
National Fire Protection Association; National Board of Fire Underwriters
Code No. 5$), and "Standards of the National Board of Fire Underwriters for
the Storage and Handling of Liquified Petroleum Gases at Utility Gas Plants''
1954 edition, (as recommended by the National Fire Protection Association;
National Board of Fire Underwriters Code No. 59); prescribing penalties for
violations thereof; and declaring an emergency.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF YAKIMA: -
Section 1. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to in-
stall, maintain, convert or use, or cause to be installed, maintained, converted, or
used, any appliance using any gas as a fuel, including piping from meter to appliance,
unless a permit therefor � issued by the Fire Marshal shall be in effect.

be issued except upon written application to the Fire Marshal
Section . 3. Fees for permits to cover cost of inspection (installation or
conversion of a gas appliance) shall be Two Dollars ($2.00) for each inspection and for
each reinspection.
Section 4. No permit shall be issued for the installation, operation,
maintenance or conversion of a gas appliance unless such installation, operation, main-
tenance or conversion shall conform to the provisions of the standard codes hereinafter
mentioned in Section 5 hereof and the provisions of the "American Standard Installation
of Gas Piping and Gas Appliances in Buildings ";; 1954 edition, with the following excep-
tions:
(a) Section 3.1.3 is hereby changed and amended to read as follows:
"It shall be determined that the appliance -.has been designed for use with
the gas to which it will be connected. No attempt shall be made to convert
the appliance from the gas specified on the rating plate for use with a dif
ferent gas without written approval of the manufacturer or the Firelrshal.
No conversion shall be made except by the use of listed conversion units."
(b) Section 4.16.3 is hereby changed to read as follows:
"No unlisted appliances shall be installed or used except as specified in
section 4.17.3.” -
(c) Section 4.1.2; subsections d, g, and h are hereby stricken from this
section.
(d) Section 5.5.$ is hereby changed to read as follows:
"All chimneys used for gas venting shall be properly lined."
Section 5. (a) The said "American Standard Installation of Gas Piping and
Gas Appliances in Buildings ", 1954 edition, approved by the American Standards Associa-
tion, Inc., except as hereinabove specifically amended and changed insofar as the same
shall apply to the City of Yakima, (b) "American Standard Requirements for Installation
of Gas Equi rpent in Large Boilers ", 1950 edition (approved by the American Standards
Association), (c) "Standards of the National Board of Fire Underwriters for the Storage
and Handling of Liquified Petroleum Gases ", 1954 edition, (as recommended by the Nation-
al Fire Protection Association; National Board of Fire Underwriters Code No. 5$), and
(d) "Standards of the National Board of Fire Underwriters for the Storage and Handling
of Liquified Petroleum Gases at Utility Gas Plants ", 1954 edition, (as recommended by the
National Fire Protection Association; National Board of Fire Underwriters Code No. 59)
are hereby adopted by reference as gas ordinances of the City of Yakima, and the provi-
sions and regulations thereof are hereby adopted as the provisions and regulations of
the City of Yakima, and the several sections as numbered therein shall constitute the
numbers and may be referred to as the numbers of this ordinance. Three copies of each
shall be filed for use and examination by the public in the office of the city clerk,
and any and all future amendments and additbns thereto, when printed and filed with the
City Clerk, shall be .considered and accepted as official amendments and additions to the
same and to this ordinance and shall be in full force and effect without further adoptial
thereof by the city of Yakima.
Section 6. Any person, firm or corporation who shall violate or fail to
comply with any of the provisions of this ordinance, or who shall counsel, aid or abet
any such violation or failure to comply, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and
upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine in any sum not exceeding three hun-
dred dollars ($300.00) or by imprisonment in the city jail for a term not exceeding
ninety (90) days, or both such fine and imprisonment.
;Section 7. This ordinance is one to provide for the immediate preservation
of public peace, property, health and safety of the people of the City of Yakima; and
an emergency is hereby declared to exist, and said ordinance shall be in full force and
effect from and after the date of its passage, approval and publication as provided for
in the city charter.

emergency." as passed this 14th day of February, 1956, and that same has been published
as required by law.
