ORDINANCE• CVO. B -1719
AN ORDINANCE amending Section 29 of Ordinance No. B -1526 entitled "AN ORDINANCE relating
to and regulating traffic, travel and transportation and their incidents
upon the streets and other ways open to the public, prescribing the powers
and duties of officers and others in relation thereto; defining offenses;
providing penalties, and repealing Ordinance No. B -131; and all amendments
thereof and all other ordinances in so far as they are in conflict there-
with, and declaring an emergency ", and declaring an emergency.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
Section 1. Section 29 of Ordinance No. B -1526 passed on December 31, 1953,
entitled as shown in the caption hereof, is hereby amended to read as follows:
"Section 29. Pedestrians' Rights and Duties at Controlled Intersections.
"(a) On streets where traffic at intersections is controlled by traffic
control signals_or by police officers, pedestrians shall not cross a road-
way against a red or "Stop" signal and shall not cross at any place except
in a marked or unmarked crosswalk. Such pedestrians shall not step from
the curb into the traveled way until the said signal shall have completely
changed, or unless signalled by an officer. A pedestrian crossing or
starting across in any such crosswalk on a green or "Go" signal shall have
the right of way over all vehicles, including those making turns, until
such pedestrian has reached the opposite curb, and it shall be unlawful for
the operator of any vehicle to fail to yield the right of way to any such
pedestrian.
"(b) On streets where traffic at intersections is controlled by traffic
control signals using the words "Walk" and "Wait ", it shall be unlawful
for a pedestrian to commence to cross a roadway against a !'Wait" signal, or
to commence to cross a roadway at any time except when facing a "Walk"

signal. A pedestrian starting across in any such crosswalk on a "Walk"
signal shall be entitled to complete crossing the same even though such
signal changes from "Walk" to "Wait" signal while such pedestrian is en-
gaged in crossing such roadway. A pedestrian starting across any such
roadway on a "Walk_" signal shall have the right of way over all vehicles,
including those making a turn, until such pedestrian has reached the oppo-
site curb, even though such signal changes while such pedestrian is engaged
- in crossing the roadway, and it shall be unlawful for operators of any
vehicle to fail to yield the right of way to any such pedestrian."
Section 2. This ordinance is one to provide for the immediate preservation
of public peace, property, health and'safety of the people of the City of Yakima, and an
emergency is hereby declared to exist, and said ordinance shall be in full force and ef-
fect from and after the date of its passage, approval and publication as provided for by
law and the City Charter.
PASSED BY THE CITY COMMISSION, signed and approved this 25th day of July,
1955.
