A RESOLUTION naming Yakima's new skate park Apple Valley Kiwanis Skate Park
in recognition of the Apple Valley Kiwanis Club which provided the
driving force and financial support for the project.
WHEREAS, the Apple Valley Kiwanis Club proposed construction of the Kiwanis
skate park in 2005 and pledged to raise money and provide financial support for this
construction; and
WHEREAS, the Apple Valley Kiwanis worked with City of Yakima staff, local
skaters and the design consultant to develop the design for the skate park and its
landscaping and donated $50,000 to the project; and
WHEREAS, a new skate park was constructed last year as part of the Upper
Kiwanis Park Redevelopment Project;
WHEREAS, the Apple Valley Kiwanis Club is committed to the support of youth
services and programs and has supported youth activities for many years; and
WHEREAS, the Apple Valley Kiwanis meets criteria specified in Resolution
R-2005-51, a resolution establishing policies and procedures relating to the naming of
public parks and recreation -related facilities; and
WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously recommends
approval of the Apple Valley Kiwanis Club's request for naming of the skate park at
Kiwanis Park; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of Yakima also desires to advance community
development, enhancement of the City's quality of life and provision of healthy
recreational opportunities for the enjoyment of its youth, now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
The Skate Park at Kiwanis Park shall be named the Apple Valley Kiwanis Skate
Park in recognition of the Apple Valley Kiwanis Club which provided the driving force and
financial support for the project.

SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
The Apple Valley Kiwanis Club requested the new skate park be named in honor of their
club. At its December 2, 2008 Business Meeting, the City Council considered this request
and directed staff to prepare appropriate legislation to officially name the new skate park
facility, which officially opened November 3, 2008 at Kiwanis Park.
The Apple Valley Kiwanis Club is committed to the support of youth services and programs
and has supported youth activities for many years. The Apple Valley Kiwanis Club initially
proposed construction of the skate park in 2005 and raised and donated $50,000 towards its
construction.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff respectfully requests the City Council to adopt the
Resolution naming the new skate park Apple Valley Kiwanis Skate Park.
BOARD/COMMISSION/COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION: The Parks and Recreation
Commission unanimously recommends the City Council adopt the Resolution naming the
new skate park Apple Valley Kiwanis Skate Park.
