SUBMITTED BY: Bob Stewart, Deputy Fire Chief Nate Henyan, YPD Officer SUMMARY EXPLANATION: On the morning of May 4, 2013, 21 year old student Thomas Ayala entered a Stanton Academy classroom to find a fire on the stovetop. Acting with calmness and composure, Thomas used a bag of salt from a nearby counter to sprinkle over the flames to prevent further growth. After turning off the stove top, he used a pair of long- handled tongs to safely remove the burning materials and finally spread more salt to completely extinguish the fire. Thomas' quick and appropriate actions were directly responsible for preventing costly damage to the school.
