Item No, _3611
For Meeting of: 5/21/2013
ITEM TITLE: Recognition of Stanton Academy Student Thomas Ayala for
Safely Extinguishing a Classroom Fire.
SUBMITTED BY: Bob Stewart, Deputy Fire Chief
Nate Henyan, YPD Officer
SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
On the morning of May 4, 2013, 21 year old student Thomas Ayala entered a Stanton Academy
classroom to find a fire on the stovetop. Acting with calmness and composure, Thomas used a
bag of salt from a nearby counter to sprinkle over the flames to prevent further growth. After
turning off the stove top, he used a pair of long- handled tongs to safely remove the burning
materials and finally spread more salt to completely extinguish the fire. Thomas' quick and
appropriate actions were directly responsible for preventing costly damage to the school.
