This failed EMS levy proposal included the Yakima Fire Chiefs proposal to place City paramedics on the City fire engines which respond to emergencies. The City of Yakima voters said NO period. What part of NO doesn't the Yakima City Fire Chief understand ? As you all know, we are living during times of extremely limited resources and we must all live within our means. We are not able to fund all of our "wants" but have to focus our energy and resources on our "basic needs ". It should be obvious that now is not the time for pilot programs / programs for expansion of government services. We understand that the current Yakima Fire Chief is still seeking Yakima City Council approval for a pilot program to place paramedics on a Yakima Fire Engine responding to emergencies. We strongly urge you to just say NO just as your Yakima voters have said NO via the special EMS election on February 3, 2009. We don't believe the cost of equipping and staffing such a pilot program is warranted and any currently budgeted funds for such a program should be redirected to other pressing emergency services needs. Simply stated, we believe the Yakima Fire Chief's proposed program for adding paramedics to the fire engines is a solution looking for a problem. We believe the two private ambulance services staffed with privately funded paramedics are serving our community as well as our community can afford. We are also not aware of a documented history of poor patient outcomes with our current private ambulance services. The City should not go into competition with private enterprise. P.O. Box 1288 • Yakima, Washington 98907 • www.saveouramericanrights.com We believe there are a multitude of questions which need concise, clear answers when considering this issue including the following: * Why would the Yakima City Council go against the will of the voters if they authorize such a . pilot program ? * How does the City fund a paramedic program beyond the proposed pilot program ? * How do you measure the success or failure of the proposed pilot program ? * How do you decide which Yakima Fire Department Engine Company is staffed during the pilot program ? Eastside ? Westside ? * What is the cost of increased risk and liability to the City of Yakima for operating a paramedic program ? It is time for this issue to be put to rest. The EMS levy proposal including funding for paramedics was overwhelmingly defeated. The voters said NO. Perhaps the Yakima City Council and Yakima Fire Chief should focus their energies on increasing the efficiencies of the fire department to reduce the substantial annual overtime budget of approximately $ 400,000. One of the efficiencies could be the prioritized use of Fire Equipment. For example, is there a need to dispatch large Fire Trucks with 3 or 4 fire fighters to non -fire, non - accident emergency calls ? We respect our Yakima Fire Fighters and the job they are paid to perform. Our Yakima Fire Department performs very vital and important fire fighting, inspection, and education services for our community and we believe the City Council should direct the Yakima Fire Chief to focus - on these vital services and let the private ambulance services do their jobs. We operate as a non -profit organization, in the traditional sense of the term, meaning that while we do not have Internal Revenue not - for - profit status, we find that unnecessary, due to the fact that we have no need to exchange funds as a matter of course. We have no dues, fees, or donations to collect, nothing as an organization to sell, no substantial costs, income, or expenes.
