It was a busy and productive year for the VCB with new projects to build travel to the Valley. The travel and tourism industry advanced modestly in 2012. A key indicator of the health of the industry is lodging data. Yakima County lodging occupancies grew 2 %, average daily room rates grew 2.6% and room tax receipts grew 2% over 2011. Tourism plays an important role in the local economy. According to Washington State Tourism research: Travelers spent an estimated $350 million in Yakima County in 2011 (most recent year figures available). Visitors created more than 3,500 jobs in tourism industries. Tourism created an additional 1,500 jobs for Yakima County in support industries including finance, construction, food processing, education, insurance, real estate and wholesale trade. Visitors to Yakima County generated $25 million in state and local taxes. These are new revenues that support our roads, police and fire services, parks and other vital services for our citizens. Tourism is economic development. It creates jobs and local taxes. It builds on our quality of life. The VCB works hard to improve the economy in the Yakima Valley by growing the tourism industry. Mike Gilmore John Cooper 2012 Board Chair President & CEO • ah Yf = + r A 4 IA SI is tip • LEI . h A00'Zor-Am CONVENTION & GROUP SALES The meetings and group business industry is an important part of the Valley's tourism industry. The VCB worked to grow this sector of the industry in 2012. Due to economic conditions and changes in the meeting industry, future conventions confirmed were down 16% compared to 2011. Staff generated 157 qualified leads. Sales Activities Olympia based meeting planners are an important source of group business for the Valley. We built on our relationships with them by hosting two networking functions. In the spring we did a baseball- themed event at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma to show meeting and sports planners that the Yakima Valley is ready to 'play ball' and we can help their meetings be a 'home run.' At just over 70 planners, our Fall "Farmer's Market Luncheon Extravaganza" drew in a record number of attendees. Guests loaded up on farm fresh Yakima Valley produce and local products while learning about the improvements at the Convention Center and updates within the hotel community. In addition to these two events, throughout the year staff made numerous trips to conduct individual sales calls with convention and group related clients. Convention & Group Services 2012 was the fourth year of utilizing MeetingMax, an on -line group reservations system, and our second year using ePly, an online conference registration system. Our Volunteer Information Specialists logged 605 hours and assisted 2,139 convention delegates. Industry Involvement & Education Taking an active role in professional trade organizations assists in staff development while building relationships and attract groups for their meetings. Trade organizations we belong to include the Washington Society of Association Executives and the Society of Government Meeting Planners. VisitYakimaValley.org • 2012 Annual Report • 3 t, MARKETING ,, Since our rebranding in 2008, the Marketing Department has - F worked to develop brand - specific content in both digital and print formats. In 2012, large advertising campaigns were created and r enhanced to showcase all of that content. In the Spring, the airwaves in the Seattle market were ringing with a catchy :60 second and :30 second radio commercial telling soggy residents that they could "Find Spring" in the sunny Yakima Valley. Putting our competing destinations in the dog , house, we developed r the award - winning Wine Doggies project promoting pet - friendly travel to the Yakima Valley. WineDoggies. com barks with fun . E ' ►_ t: showcasing adventures, pet - friendly lodging and attractions, and a Doggie Bloggie featuring fun in wine country by our _ Tourism Director's dog 3 "Cooper." The project 1J won the 2012 Best Idea Award from the Western Association of CVBs. Our Farm Fresh Fun! campaign went mobile with a new mobile -ready version for travelers to use prior to their visit and while in the region. YakimaValleyWineCountry.com and our main consumer site also have new mobile -ready versions with itinerary and mapping tools. The winter campaign, Sip, Ski and Savor, was enhanced with a big F winter getaway giveaway, new attraction information from White Pass Ski Resort, and a listing of winter events for Valley towns k www.WinterInTheValley.com. All of our campaigns were supported with digital and print advertisements with seattletimes.com, oregonlive.com, ScenicWA.com, TripAdvisor.com, Washington Tasting Room magazine, Sunset magazine, y NW Travel magazine, SIP magazine and Seattle Met magazine. Our campaigns delivered a 20% increase in F web traffic in 2012. .• •+' w tea', * i TOURISM DEVELOPMENT The VCB assisted Yakima County Development Association (YCDA/New Vision) and Yakima County on the development of a new wine signage program in Yakima County. The project was completed with the installation of the new signs throughout Yakima County, providing visitors with cohesive directional signage throughout our wine country. Group & Leisure The Yakima Valley gained exposure through our attendance at industry, consumer and media trade shows in 2012. Staff participated in the following shows in 2012: • Go West Summit (international operators)- Las Vegas, NV • Travel Industrypssociation PowWow (international operators) — LosAngeles, CA • Two Nation Vacation Travel Show (tour and travel trade) — Portland, OR • ITB (German tour operators) — Berlin, Germany • Society of American Travel Writers Annual Conference — Indianapolis, IN • Wine Bloggers Conference — Portland, OR A special event we participated in was the Go West Summit Dinner in Tacoma, WA. As a participant, we were able to represent the Yakima Valley's interest and support of the 2014 conference being held in Washington State for the first time. FamiliarizationTours An important role of the VCB is to invite and host tours to the Yakima Valley in partnership with the local tourism industry and state organizations like the Seattle CVB. A group of tour operators visited the area in July and two media tours were hosted during the fall for French travel media. Media Exposure In addition to calling and corresponding with writers, we target niche market writers. For example, in the fall we invited and hosted beer bloggers to experience the Fresh Hop Ale Festival. GreenRubino remained the public relations firm to direct a campaign to promote tourism and year -round culinary travel to the Yakima Valley. By the end of the year, our collective editorial media efforts generated $1,560,465 in advertising value in 95 publications /media outlets with a combined readership exceeding 53 million. The number of articles increased by 20% in 2012. The Yakima Valley enjoyed editorial exposure in the following media in 2012: • AAA Journey Magazine . The recent renovations and improvements were based upon historic streetscape elements and reginal activities of the area. Northern Pacific Railroad, having been denied its request for services in what is now the City of Union Gap, Washington, gave away land in what became North Yakima in the early 1880's. Many businesses moved to this area bringing both commerce and their buildings from their original location and created the new town of Yakima. Take a step back into history with a stroll along the boardwalk of Track 29 and visit very unique shops located in authentic railroad cars.
