7. Disinterpi. clWe
Ina tough, competitive world, it is crucial
for CEOs to have direct and forthright
conversations with clients and suppliers. To
do that effectively, they have to
disintermediate their direct reports and even
their techies, which means that they will be
able to yet accur -ate information from the
f eld without-it b--eing- biasea;-s.ay,
by their direct reports -who may only want to
tell their CEO what they think he or she
wants to hear.
"By using social media tools like Twitter
themselves, CEOs can disintermedidte
everyone from the data stream. They can.
connect directly with customers, clients,
suppliers and others and hear unfiltered
reports of what is really going on in their
enterprises. Just as importantly, they can
make their views known to their followers
and stakeholder group without it being
filtered by their PR people or the media. In
times of crisis, this might save the
organization."
SUPERMAJORITY
At our last evening meeting, on Jan. 15, we considered a resolution at the
request of Councilman Lover to ask voters whether they would like to
1
amend the city charter to require a five -vote supermajority on any new
councilmanic tax increases. I supported the idea in principle and planned
to vote for it, but changed my vote at the last moment. The resolution failed
4 -3.
My decision has gained a fair amount of media attention, both that night
and again last week when I announced I would be raising the issue again.
It's really not very complicated. The resolution as presented needed to be
amended so that the election would take place in August instead of April. I
was annoyed with the tone of our discussion and made a snap decision
that rather than continue to talk about it that night, we could correct the
problem on another day. That's what I hope we'll do tonight.
Personally, I believe it should be hard for elected officials to raise taxes. We
should always look for other solutions first.
Last November, Washington state voters overwhelmingly approved — for
the fourth time — an initiative that requires our state Legislature to get a
two - thirds majority vote to raise taxes. That initiative passed in every single
county in the state, and voters in Pierce County passed a similar measure
requiring a supermajority vote on councilmanic tax increases in their
county. Voters in our state clearly want elected officials to think twice and
work together before asking for more money. I think this charter
amendment is going to be very popular with Yakima voters, and that's why
it has my support.
