The North America Northwest Area Day of Service 2012
Thousands of volunteers will join in service during 2012 throughout the North America
Northwest area. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints began a coordinated effort in
September of 2011to partner with other community organizations and service minded entities
and individuals to provide community service, primarily to the poor and the needy. As part of
this
Goals of the North America NW Area Day of Service for 2012 include:
• Providing service to the poor and the needy
• Uniting our communities
• Building bridges of friendship between peoples of all faith, faith -based organizations,
civic leaders and community organizations
The North America NW Area Day of Service includes a concerted community service effort by
members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in British Columbia, Washington,
Alaska, Oregon and Northern Idaho. The projects are to be scheduled as close as possible to the
date of September 11th to commemorate the sense of community that many experienced
following the attacks on September 11, 2001.
During the Day of Service in September of 2011, 576 members of the Selah and Yakima Stakes
(Congregations) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and other community partners
contributed over 2100 hours of service to various community projects. These numbers do not
include the service projects conducted in the Kittitas County.
The 2011 Yakima /Selah area projects included:
City of Yakima - Waste Water Division
This project involved preparing and planting nursery bed of native riparian plants at 2220 East
Viola.
City of Yakima - Water and Irrigation
This project involved cutting and bagging shrubs & weeds along the reservoir on SE Corner 40th
and Englewood.
City f Yakima - Southeast Community Center
This project involved cutting and bagging weeds and general exterior cleanup.
City of Yakima - Refuse Division
This was a major street, alley, sidewalk and park beautification project
Volunteer Chore Services Projects ( Selah Congregations)•
Volunteers accomplished housecleaning, yard work, & home repairs for the elderly and
disabled at different homes in Selah.
City of Tieton
Volunteers cleared terrain in preparation for a pedestrian path on acreage purchased by the City of
Tieton.
It is anticipated that the 2012 Day of Service will engage an even greater number of volunteers
and provide an increase in the hours of service rendered.
The 2012 Yakima /Selah area projects include:
City of Tietou
Improvements to the walking train park in the City. Also to place additional park benches. Also work on
BMX trail.
Yakima Salvation Army Thrift Store
Sort and organize donations, cleanup the premises and discard unusable items. Additionally, build two
separate items for the store: 1) an enclosure with three fitting rooms to replace the one currently available,
and two 4x8 sorting tables each with an overhead bar for clothes hangers.
Yakima Salvation Army Church
Remove and discard all shrubbery and all rotten landscaping timbers and beauty bark on the east side
(16th Avenue) of the church building and on a contiguous small portion of the south side of the building.
Rake - smooth - prepare (for more beauty bark). Remove (from the east side) and replant (on the south
side) four (4) small ornamental trees, if possible.
WA State Parks - Yakima Sportsman Stake Park
Staining and painting structures (materials provided)
Brush removal from island and pond trails
City of Yakima Parks & Recreation
Clean Perimeter Fairgrounds (city property)
