`wirEREAS, on May 5, 1862, in the rural township of Pue6ta, Mexico a ragged, untrained and under -
equipped smalfarmy of rural zndigenous people, mostly farmers, met and defeated the invading (French Army, a
weff-armed professionafforce; and
WIPEREAS, the battle of crue6fa proved to be the catalyst which provided the zndigenous Mexican
people with confidence to persevere in ultimate triumph over the 'French in 1867; and
`G itEREAS, the people of Mexican heritage have 6rought these same values of self - determination and
self - respect to the VnitedStates and more importantly to the rYakima'()affey; and
WHIEREAS, many Mexican /Latino/Xispanic community members have servedva(zantly and
courageously in the VS armedforces in defending our great nation; and
WY PERMS, those veterans five amongst us contrihutzng to their communities with little recognition or
acknowledgement; and
WJIEIREAS, the growth of the Mexican /LatinoMiispanic community in 'Yakima has enriched the
cultural diversity in education, arts and Business; and
'W`KiEAS, the Mexican /Latino /Jfzspanzc community wishes to acknowledge thezr culture and
strong values with the entzre community to improve communication and understanding of all cultures; and
WI-PERMS, festivals are an important economic development toolfor revitalizing our downtown; and
WI E 'E AS, the City of 'Yakima recognizes the culturalandeconomic contributions of the
Mexican /Latino /J-fispanic community; and
W E REAS, the Jfzspanic Cham6er of Commerce of (Yakima County supports the efforts of the City
of 'Yakima in its contznuous quest to enhance downtown 6y bringing events that witf6ring more tourists into the
Yakima area, 6y hosting the 11t AnnualCinco de Mayo Fiesta Grande in downtown Yakima on Saturday and
Sunday, May 5 and 6, 2012 between 1st and 3rd Streets on'Yakzma Avenue and the surrounding area as well as
other related activities that will take place throughout the week

Ms Cinco de Mayo Pageant Contestants
Elissa Hernandez
Ms. Hernandez is a senior at Eisenhower High School in Yakima. She has 2
ed sisters and 3 brothers making her the 2 oldest and is pursuing her goals to
attend the Yakima Valley Community College to get her AA in criminal law
to understand the rules behind the justice system, after which she plans to
join the US Air force and make it a career and continue her education to get
, ` l . a four year degree in criminal justice to become a federal agent. She has the
greatest support from her mother and her sister that encourages her and
gives her all that she needs. Ms. Hernandez plans to return to her
k community and encourage kids to pursue their dreams and continue their
�;. _ 4 education. She is participating in the Ms Cinco Pageant for the possibility of
obtaining a scholarship to continue her education and fulfill her dream of
becoming a federal agent.
Delfina Lopez
Ms. Lopez is a senior at Eisenhower High School in Yakima. She is a
4'''' daughter daughter of a farmworker family and has 7 other siblings at home. She

• , wants to attend a four year university and obtain a degree in business to
work with an agency that provides assistance to businesses such as
Alli accounting services or business assistance. Eventually she wants to own her
own business after gaining experience. She says she has the love and
T support of her family that has helped her succeed. Their support allows her
-- .. _ to goal to continue into higher education... Ms. Lopez also sees the value of
_ participating in the Ms Cinco Pageant to get an opportunity to increase her
f . people skills, get out of her shyness, meet new people and grow as a young
iltr ,< lady. She wants to serve as role model for her younger siblings and develop
into a responsible adult.
t ' Adriana Martinez
Ms. Martinez is Junior at Davis High School in Yakima. She comes from a
farm worker family and has 3 brothers and 2 sisters which are her biggest
supporters for her to achieve all of her goals. She plans to attend the Yakima
.4 Valley Community College or Eastern WA University to get a degree in the
medical field with plans to continue her education to obtain a medical degree.
�^ ,'': • She is a kind young lady that loves to work with families and young children,
1± so becoming a pediatrician fits her personality. Ms. Martinez is participating
in the Ms Cinco compete M Ci for the scholarship help with her higher education

.'_ studies and learn leadership skills that will help her for the future in both her
personal and academic dream.

Yasmin Sepulveda
Ms. Sepulveda is in her fist year at Heritage University and is only 18
year old. She lives in Toppenish but saw this as an opportunity to help her
toward obtaining a degree in nursing and her RN certification. When she
was young, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after
her brother was born. At the time, she didn't understand the concept and
felt helpless in trying to help her mother. Because of the great courage of
her mother (she has been in remission since 2004) and her support, she
plans to go into the medical field to help those that are in need in her
community and the Yakima Valley. She understands the feeling of going
through being helpless and wants to help other go through the process
r with a better understanding. Ms. Sepulveda is participating in the Ms
Cinco Pageant to learn leadership skills and the opportunity for a
scholarship to be able to pay for tuition and achieve her goals to become
an RN.
Ana Solorzano
Ms. Solorzano is a senior at Eisenhower High School in Yakima. Her
parents are farm workers and support her 4 brothers and 3 sisters and are
very supportive in helping Ms. Solorzano achieve her dreams and goals.
a^ # She plans to attend the University of Washington in pre med, and then go
on to obtain a medical degree and specialize in cardiac surgery. She feels
that this profession will allow her to help people by saving their lives for
v them to continue living. Ms. Solorzano plans to return to Yakima to
support those that have supported her, such as her parents and
4 Latino/Hispanic community. She wants to set up a scholarship fund for
Latinas to continue their education. She believes participating in the Ms
Cinco Pageant will allow her to grow as a person and learn skills that she
will need through her college career and beyond.

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Yakima County invites all
veterans specially Latino veterans to a wonderful downtown cultural
event. There will be a color guard to initiate the event, after which all
veterans will be recognized for their service to our country & the
freedom we enjoy.
