TO: Interim City Manager, Michael Morales
Members of the Yakima City Council
FROM: Nancy Fortier, Refuse and Recycling Manager
SUBJECT: Update on Department of Ecology Waste Tire Efforts for 2011-
2012
In August 2011, the Refuse Division received $18,637.00 in funding from the Department of
Ecology Waste Tire Removal Account for the 2011 -2012 biennium. The. funding is intended to
be used by the Refuse Division for costs associated with the removal and disposal of illegally
dumped tires and tire piles throughout the city limits. In 2011 a surveillance camera was
purchased and mounted at a location known for illegal dumping activity, in an attempt to identify
individuals and vehicles being used to illegally dump tires. Although no individuals have been
identified to date, the camera has been a deterrent to illegal dumping at this particular location.
In 2011, the grant funding paid $669 for the removed and disposed of 329 tires from various
locations throughout the city of Yakima. This year, 351 tires have been removed and disposed of
by the Refuse Division and volunteers from Office of Neighborhood Development. The cost for
labor and equipment in 2012 has been $969.
