ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION YAKIMA VALLEY HEARING & SPEECH CENTER 2011 Yakima Valley Hearing & Speech Center (YVHSC) provides services to the children and adults in the Yakima Valley with communication disabilities in order to improve the quality and productivity of their lives. The demographics for YVHSC show that 64% of the enrolled children are economically subsidized. English is preferred by 70% of families while Spanish is preferred by 30 %. HISTORY The Yakima Valley Hearing & Speech Center was established by the Yakima Rotary Club in 1971. Prior to this families of children with communication and hearing impairments had to travel to Seattle for evaluation and treatment services. The Rotary Club provided financial support to the YVHSC Preschool Deaf Program until 1985. Since that time the Center has supported the Preschool Deaf Program with service fees and contributions from United Way contributions. YAKIMA VALLEY HEARING & SPEECH SERVICES The mission of Yakima Valley Hearing & Speech Center is to provide professional services that enable people with communication and hearing disorders achieve their full potential. As a private, nonprofit 501 -c -3, we have been providing vital communication services to families in the Yakima Valley for forty years. YVHSC manages 22,000 clinical appointments per year in our center, in hospitals, school settings and in homes. The primary services are speech, swallowing and hearing evaluations, pediatric speech and hearing evaluations, hearing aids, and speech therapy. The speech communication program includes therapy for articulation, dysfluencies, cognition, language development, education for the hard of hearing and deaf, and voice therapy. Services are available to all members of the community. FUNDING The services at YVHSC are fee -based and financed through insurance, Medicaid, grants and private pay with a sliding scale. YVHSC activities are funded through a variety of sources including contributions from generous philanthropists and grants. The Scottish Rite organization provides needed scholarships for speech services for children. Board members contribute their time and support on a voluntary basis. We currently manage 104 appointments per day for children and adults with communication disabilities. Over the past 40 years the Center has made notable steps of impact and achievement while improving the quality and productivity of thousands of lives. • Service Area - We served 3,702 patients - children and adults - in the Yakima Valley in 2010. There were 17,034 appointments. • Universal Access - The program is available to all children and adults. 440 children are currently receiving services each month. • Budget — The 2010 YVHSC budget was 1,506,850. • Staff - YVHSC operates with a staff of 19 professionals and they include 4 Audiologists, 7 Speech- Language Pathologists, 6 Speech- Language Pathology Assistants, and 2 Teachers of the Deaf. There are seven administrative and billing personnel. • Service impact - YVHSC manages 22,000 clinical appointments per year in our center, in hospitals, school settings and in homes. • Hard of Hearing Program — There are 25 children currently enrolled in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Language program. • Deaf Education Program - The YVHSC deaf program had two talented students go on to become Miss Deaf Washington! • Global impact — YVHSC currently has a client in India receiving therapy weekly via electronic network connection. • Work Force Ready — Hearing & Speech services provided early in a child's life increases work opportunity later in life and supports the economy, • Home -based Service- 25 appointments each week are home -based sessions for those without the physical mobility to come to the center. • "Sound Off' is the informative YVHSC quarterly news bulletin mailed to the medical providers who refer patients to the Center. • Partners - YVHSC partners with Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, Yakima Valley Regional Hospital, Yakima Valley School, Carroll Children's Center, St. Paul's School, St. Joseph School, medical clinics and the Washington Corrects facilities to deliver hearing and speech services. • Workshops - YVHSC sponsors a workshop each year for over 100 professionals. Continuing education credits are earned by those attending. • Book Recycling - is a part of the YVHSC yearly business plan. The project recycles children's books to children enrolled at the Center. • Parents Become Teachers — because all parents participate in their child's therapy sessions in order to learn how to teach at home. • Staff Training — All staff members receive yearly professional and essential safety training to keep them at the top of their profession. • Community Outreach — YVHSC staff members participate with child development consortiums, and volunteer booths at college health fairs.
