SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
In 2002, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) received word from
the Washington Utilities Transportation Commission (WUTC) that the crossing on US 97 in the
vicinity of Branch Road was inadequate and needed to be upgraded. They originally received
two cantilever crossing structures from Yakima County to install at this location. However, the
northbound structure needs to span three lanes and the two structures they received from the
County only span two lanes. Ed Harper of the WUTC noticed that the structure on Lincoln
Avenue between 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue was no longer being used, and suggested that
WSDOT contact the City about the possibility of WSDOT using this structure to fix the
situation.
Since this crossing has not been used by rail traffic for many years, the rails across Lincoln
Avenue were removed last fall to improve the ride for vehicular traffic and the structures poses
a hazard (fixed object that can be hit by errant vehicles) in the City's right of way, it is
recommended that this cantilevered train crossing light standard be donated to WSDOT to
upgrade the crossing on US 97.
