BUSINESS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
YAKIMA, WASHINGTON
AGENDA STATEMENT
Item No. B
For Meeting of April 5, 2011
ITEM TITLE: Consideration of an Ordinance to amend the City Council Election District Map
SUBMITTED BY: Michael Morales, Acting Assistant City Manager
Joan Davenport, Acting Community and Economic Development Director
CONTACT PERSONITELEPHONE: Joan Davenport (576 -6417
SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
The City of Yakima Charter (City Ordinance 261, adopted March 10, 1959) requires that City
Council Election Districts be reviewed after the release of each decennial federal census data to
ensure the districts are as equal as practical and that any re- division of Council Districts be
accomplished so as to be effective not less than ninety days prior to the municipal primary
election to be held next following the publication of census results for nomination of candidates
for "district positions" on the Council (Charter, Article II, Section 1 B(1)).
On February 23, 2011, the US Census Bureau released block level population from the 2010
Census Redistricting Data Summary File (Public Law 94 -171). The official 2010 population for
the City of Yakima was reported at 91,067 persons.
The existing Council election districts conform to the requirements of the City Charter and do
not need to be amended at this time. However, a new Council District Map should be adopted
into the Municipal Code (YMC 1.04.020), as accomplished by this Ordinance.
