SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
Due to the drought conditions experienced during the year 2001 the drinking water supply from
the Bureau of Reclamation Storage Contract was reduced to 37% of normal. The back -up wells
we operated from early June to mid October to replace the water that was not available. The
electrical power consumed due to the operation of the wells was much greater than the amount
budgeted for 2001. The increased electrical power costs has created a shortfall of approximately
$80,000.00 for this line item in the budget. Approximately $30,000.00 in adjustments have been
made to other line items in the budget to cover part of the shortfall, leaving a need for an
additional $50,000.00. Staff respectfully requests that the Council approve the attached
ordinance increasing the electrical power budget by $50,000.00 for the Potable Water Supply
service unit.
