She attends community meeting after community meeting and feels all we do is talk in this community and there is never any action so, in an effort to stop any further devastation and heartache she has come up with a cost effective way to educate and rebuild the Hispanic culture. By using the radio, which is a resource that is highly utilize by the culture already with the younger population it aides in building their creativity and imagination. The idea is to raise community awareness on several topics during different hours on the radio with minimal television exposure included (cost effectively she felt more beneficial for radio) and this is laid out in a structured format with different hours of the day for each of the topics i.e. • Start off with just some traditional instrumental or mariachi, marimbas music that people can call in and ask for information about. • A story of the week that week can ask young people to practice reading with family members, tutor, or teacher and then at the end of the week Three young people will be chose to read their story on the air and be given a prize, congratulated and praised as well as whomever taught them so that it keeps everyone involved motivated to keep up the good work . • A time for the elders to have music that is being played from their era that may have some significance to them and at this point, they can call in and ask questions about it or read poems, share their thoughts or feelings on specific songs like an "open mike /open air time" for them to call in. • She incorporates challenges for all adolescents to participate in over the Internet with prizes to be given to the winners • Airtime talking about different types of historical struggles, i.e. when Mexico lost a major part of its land, bring in people to reflect on their "oral history" that have lived through many decades or have lived through most of the history mentioned during that airtime. • Valuable spots regarding healthcare, finances, education, law, and allow people the opportunity to learn how to obtain those services • "Library on the Air" session for those that are visually and literally impaired • Sundays a spiritual session that includes different religious denominations and learning about how to reach salvation These are just some of the ideas brought forth in this plan to action for our community Her reasons behind them are simple... to hopefully get our youth off the streets and out of gangs, to collaborate • with other efforts in the community that are already in motion so that our younger children have a better chance at a brighter future, to recognize that our youth maintain themselves through their studies so that they can excel, for adults to start believing in themselves too even when they have made mistakes in the past but are now mentoring and moving forward, and to raise the economy by coming together as participants in this entire valley residents and business owners alike. This is a call to action to our community from Silvina Valdez- Mendoza, a concerned citizen, mother, and grandmother.
