SUMMARY EXPLANATION
On December 16, 2005 United Ministerial Alliance submitted an application and paid the $500
application fee to rename B Street to Martin Luther King, Jr Boulevard.
On January 3, City Council reviewed the petition and made an initial determination that the
request was valid. A public hearing date of March 7 was scheduled.
Following review of written and verbal comments received at a Public Hearing held on March
7"', Council unanimously approved the request to rename B Street to Martin Luther King, Jr
Boulevard and directed staff to prepare legislation for formal approval and implementation of
this change.
In order to comply with Section 8.70.050(E) of the Yakima Municipal Code as it currently reads
a Resolution has been prepared to rename B Street to Martin Luther King, Jr Boulevard.
Further, in light of the proposed amendment to Section 8.70 050(E) for renaming City streets
by Ordinance staff has also prepared an Ordinance to rename B Street to Martin Luther King,
Jr Boulevard.
Staff contacted the US Postal Service and Traffic Engineering to confirm their minimum
timeframe to implement this street name change. They both stated 60 days would be sufficient
for this transition. Staff suggests this street name change become effective at the first of a
month to ease the conversion for property owners, tenants and service agencies; therefore an
effective date of June 1, 2006 is recommended.
