AN ORDINANCE increasing salaries for the Mayor, Assistant
Mayor, and Councilmembers; amending Section
2.20.094 of the City of Yakima Municipal Code.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
Section 1: Section 2.20.094 of the City of Yakima Munic-
ipal Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
"2.20.094 Salary of mayor, assistant mayor, and
councilmembers - Fringe benefits.
A. Salary of Mayor and Assistant Mayor. The mayor and
assistant mayor shall be paid a salary computed and paid
on a monthly basis. The salary of the mayor and assis-
tant mayor for the two -year term commencing January 1,
1990 and for the successive term thereafter shall be as
follows:
Term Commencing Salary Per Month
Mayor - January, 1990 $855.00
Mayor - January, 1992 $900.00
Assistant Mayor - January, 1990 $650.00
Assistant Mayor - January, 1992 $690.00
Provided, in the event either the mayor or assistant
mayor who are elected in January 1990 are not newly
elected or re- elected to the City Council, then the
salary for such mayor and /or assistant mayor shall be:
Mayor - $650.00
Assistant Mayor - $325.00
B. Salaries of Councilmembers. Councilmembers shall be
paid salaries computed and paid on a monthly basis. The
salaries for councilmembers elected to take office for
terms commencing before January 1, 1990, the terms com-
mencing January 1, 1990, and the successive term thereaf-
ter shall be as follows:
Term Commencing Salary Per Month
Councilmembers - Before January, 1990 $325.00
Councilmembers - January, 1990 $570.00
Councilmembers - January, 1992 $600.00
C. Provided, that commencing on January 1, 1993, and
• thereafter on the 1st day of January of each successive
year, the salaries paid to councilmembers, mayor, and
assistant mayor shall be increased or decreased for each
year according to the following formula. The 1992 salary
for the mayor, assistant mayor, and councilmembers
established in Subsection B shall be the base. To that
figure shall be added an annual adjustment which shall be
the percent change in the United States Department of
Labor Consumer Price Index for Seattle Urban Wage Earners
and Clerical Workers, or the successor to such index,
calculated from the previous year's July index to the
current year's July index less 1%. For example, the
calculation for the increase or decrease in salary for
1993 shall be based upon the indexes from July of 1991 to
July of 1992.
The annual increase or decrease in salaries for the
mayor, assistant mayor, and councilmembers shall continue
until such salaries reach no more than $1,000 per month
for councilmembers, $1,250 per month for the assistant
mayor, and $1,500 per month for the mayor. Thereafter,
• such salaries shall remain at the aforementioned levels
until changed by ordinance.

Commencing January 1, 1993, the Council may by resolution
affirm the annual increase or decrease established by the
formula in this Subsection.
D. Fringe Benefits. Commencing January 1, 1982, members
of the City Council, including the mayor and assistant
mayor, shall receive no compensation for serving as
• mayor, assistant mayor or councilmember other than the
salary provided by Subsections A, B, and C of this
Section, and the following additional benefits, which are
authorized:
1. Reimbursement for expenditures as provided by
Section 2.20.086 of this Chapter;
2. Protection of a five thousand dollar life
insurance policy, with the premium fully paid by the
City;
3. Protection of Workmen's Compensation Insur-
ance coverage under the State Industrial Insurance sys-
tem,
4. Protection by a policy of insurance known
variously as professional liability insurance or errors
and omission insurance, covering Councilmembers acting in
their official capacity, with coverage in the same amount
as obtained from time to time for the protection of other
City officers and employees, with the premium fully paid
by the City;
• 5. Payment by the City of its portion of Social
Security payroll tax on earnings of Councilmembers; and
any other benefits expressly required by applicable
laws.
Section 2. This ordinance shall be in full force and
effect thirty days after its passage, approval, and publica-
tion as provided by law and by the City Charter.
