ORDINANCE NO 93- 35
AN ORDINANCH elating to fire protection, discontinuing the Yakima Fire
Department's current policy of resetting private fire alarm
systems, and enacting a new Section 10.03 095 to the City of Yakima
Municipal Code.
WHEREAS, the Yakima Fire Department is currently in the practice of resetting
private fire alarm systems when the Yakima Fire Department responds to an
automatic fire alarm activation, and
WHEREAS, resetting the private fire alarm systems may take a fire suppression
crew out of service and prevent it from responding to subsequent fire alarms; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Yakima has determined that it is in the
best interests of the citizens of the Cit) of Yakima to require private fire alarm
system owners and operators to be responsible for resetting their alarms, now,
il therefore,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
Section 1 Section 10 03 095 is hereby enacted as a new section to the City of
Yakima Municipal Code to read as follows.
"10 03.095 Resetting Private Fire Alarm Systems.
A. Whenever the Yakima Fire Department responds to an alarm,
the Yakima Fire Department shall not be under any duty to reset any
private fire alarm s) stem Resetting the private fire alarm systems
shall be the responsibility of the owner or operator of the system.
B Upon completion of an alarm activation investigation or
resolution of an emergency, the owner /operator of the system shall be
notified of the alarm activation If no owner /operator is available or
cannot or will not reset the alarm system, then the Code Enforcement
Office shall be notified The owner /operator shall be advised that the
owner /operator is responsible to reset the alarm system or to have the
alarm system reset by a qualified person If no emergency exists,
apparatus shall notify the Alarm Center that the system is out of service
and Alarm Dispatcher shall notify the owner /operator or Code
Enforcement If an alarm system has a Potter Box, Yakima Fire
Department personnel shall check to see if the code wheel is in one of
the Red, Blue or Green positions."
• Section 2 This ordinance shall be in full force and effect 30 days after its
passage, approval, and publication as provided by law and by the City Charter

SUBJECT Resetting of Private Alarm Systems
SUPERSEDES DIRECTIVE New DATED
I. POLICY
A. It shall be the policy of the Yakima Fire Department not to reset Private Fire
Alarm Systems.
B It shall be the policy of the Yakima Fire Department that resetting of Private
Fire Alarm Systems shall be the responsibility of the owner or person
responsible for the building.
II. OBJECTIVES
A. To limit the liability of the City of Yakima and Yakima Fire Department.
B To return Yakima Fire Department personnel to service in a timely manner
III. PROCEDURE
A. Upon completion of an alarm activation investigation or resolution of an
emergency, the building owner or responsible shall be notified of the alarm
activation.
B If no owner /responsible is available or will not reset the alarm system, Code
Enforcement Office shall be notified.
C. The owner /responsible shall be advised that they are responsible to reset, or
have reset by a qualified person, the alarm system.
D If owner /responsible cannot or will not reset the system, the CodeEnforcement
Office shall be notified.
E. If no emergency exists, apparatus shall notify the Alarm Center that the system
is out of service and Alarm Dispatcher shall notify owner /responsible or Code
Enforcement.
F If an alarm system has a Potter Box, Yakima Fire Department personnel shall
check to see if the code wheel is in one of the Red, Blue or Green positions.

IV RESPONSIBILITY
A. It shall be the responsibility of the Incident Commander to notify the
owner /responsible that they are responsible for resetting the alarm system.
B It shall be the responsibility of the Incident Commander to have the On Call
City Code Official notified if the owner /responsible cannot or will not reset the
system.
C. It shall be the responsibility of the Incident Commander to check the Potter Box
and assure the code wheel is in one of the Red, Blue or Green positions.
