WHEREAS, all citizens regardless of race, creed or ethnicity deserve to 6e treated with
dignity, respect, compassion, andjustice; and
WHEREAS, each act of racism or discrimination is one too many; and
WHEREAS, racism can take many different forms, including but not limited to
discrimination; personal attacks, including violence; written or verbal threats or insults; and
damage to property, including graffiti; and
WHEREAS, racism and discrimination hurts everyone; and
WHEREAS; because racism hurts everyone, 'YWCAs across the nation have taken a
stand against racism to raise people's consciousness that racism stifexists in many forms; and
WHEREAS, the elimination of racism can only 6e achieved through the participation
of afcitizens in dialogue, reflection, and action; and
WHEREAS, our shared goat is to advocate for increased awareness of the lasting and
negative effects of racism in our communities, institutions, and personal relationships; and
WHEREAS; the persistence and pervasiveness of racism divides our community and
keeps individualsfrom achieving success in education, economics, employment, and quality of
life.
WOW, 2JCE1RETORE, in recognition of the impact that racism has on the health and
well being of our community, 1, Kathy Coffey, SYtayor of the City of 'Yakima and on behalf of
the 'Yakima City Council- do hereby proclaim the weekofApril25-28, 2019 as
