Greg Copeland SUBJECT Kristen Drury Graduation In 2008 the Yakima Police Department began the application process to send Kristen Drury to the National Firearms Examiner Academy (NFEA) The NFEA is a national academy run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms in Washington D C In late 2009, Kristen began a four -month pre- course study program which she completed in addition to her other duties at YPD In January of 2010 she went to D C for the 18- week Academy This was followed by another four months of working closely with the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab in Seattle to complete the next phase of the program Finally, Kristen returned to D C for a two week follow -up school, after which she graduated with her class on September 24, 2010 Kristen has now been trained in the fundamentals of firearm and tool mark examination and has the foundation for her supervised development into being certified as a qualified S examiner She has also received training in many other firearms- related areas. We consider it to be a rare accomplishment for a Department of our size to have an employee attend the NFEA. The Department would like to thank the Washington State Patrol for agreeing to sponsor Kristen and to supervise her during her ongoing development. Senior Forensic Scientist Rick Wyant of the WSP Seattle Forensic lab has been working closely with Kristen throughout her training. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives WASHINGTON DC -- Ammoland.com - The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and III Explosives' (ATF) National Firearms Examiner Academy (NFEA) today graduated its class of 2009- 2010 after a year -long training program. The NFEA provides training for apprentice /entry level firearm and tool mark examiners from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies The curriculum includes the fundamentals of firearm and tool mark examination and serves as the foundation for the trainees' supervised development into qualified examiners The NFEA class was held from October 2009 — September 2010 and included modules of instruction that dealt with laboratory protocol, safety and ethics as well as the standards that govern the admissibility of expert testimony in court. Students received training in the history of black powder; the evolution of early firearms, modern ammunition and its evolution and manufacturing, and microscopy and instrumentation.
