WieERE,AS, it is a priority of the City of Yakima for our community to be safe; and
`Gt' L RAS, the family is the foundation of a safe and healthy community, and every
individual has the right to five without fear and
PY'3IEREAS, domestic violence affects all citizens of Yakima, crossing all racial, social,
religious, ethnic, geographical and economic groups; and
WigERE,AS, domestic violence is an immense problem in Yakima County, where in 2017, the
'YWCA Yakima served more than 6,600 individuals who were impacted by domestic violence; and
PY'3IEREAS, in Yakima County, there have been more than 39 domestic violence -related
homicides since 1997; this number includes domestic violence victims, their children, friends or family
members, as well as law enforcement officers, and
4''3IE1 AS, domestic violence is widespread, whereby one in three persons will either be a
victim of violence or personally know someone who is a victim; and
PY'3IEREAS, the City of Yakima is committed to eliminating domestic violence and ensuring a
safe and healthy community for all its citizens,
ivoW 2-t ERETDRE, in recognition of the impact that domestic violence has on the health
and well-being of our community, 1, Kathy Cofey, U'tayor of the City of Yakima and behalf of the
Yakima City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of October2018 as
«vOWIsTiC VIOLENCE AWARENESS OW „
in the City of Yakima and urge all citizens to participate in the activities planned by the 'YWCA
Yakima and community organizations during this month. Citizens should also take the opportunity to
educate themselves about the impact of domestic violence in Yakima and to become familiar with
resources and programs available.
