The minutes from the August 26 meeting were reviewed Huey motioned to accept the minutes as presented and Adkison seconded the motion The motion passed unanimously GFI Coordinator update. Coffey reported that the Selection Committee decided to work with a consultant. The Committee unanimously decided on a consulting company and will be working on a contract. It is anticipated that the contract will be reviewed by the Council Public Safety Committee and forwarded to the full Council for approval The consultant would begin work immediately after the contract is approved Garcia added that after reviewing the requirements the Selection Committee felt that more structure was needed for the position and some additional items needed to be in place before hiring a coordinator and that's why the decision was made to go with a consulting company Gang Presentation. Sgt. Dave Cortez introduced himself and his background with the Yakima Police Department and gave a presentation on gangs (A copy of the powerpoint presentation is attached for the record ) Sub - Committee updates Gutierrez reported that the Prevention Committee is being organized but has not met yet. The Committee will be developing a marketing plan for 0 distribution of the gang brochures that were printed earlier this year Beraza suggested distributing them during the school open houses (first week in November) No report from the Intervention p on Committee No report from the Suppression Committee Student mentoring /interview update. Beraza and the Committee members met with and interviewed the students about serving on the Steering Committee A total of 11 students were interviewed The Committee recommends that three students serve on the Steering Committee and that two alternates be selected as well Beraza moved that the Interview Committee ask the three top students to serve on the Steering Committee and that two alternates (back -ups) be chosen Gutierrez seconded the motion The motion passed unanimously Beraza will prepare a permission form for the parents to sign After the interviews, the Committee discussed establishing a Youth Advisory Committee The purpose of the Youth Advisory Committee would be so that the Steering Committee could run things through the kids first. Marquez motioned that a Youth Advisory Committee consisting of high school and middle school students be created by the Steering Committee and Gutierrez seconded the motion The motion passed unanimously Retreat update. Granato reported that we are still waiting for the consultant/coordinator to be hired before the retreat is scheduled It will be on a Saturday in October Some potential locations were discussed (armory, YSD building, City facility, etc) As soon as the date is set,® a notice and agenda will be sent out. Date for next meeting. The next Steering Committee meeting is scheduled for September 22 at 4 p m CORRECTION The next Steering Committee meeting will be October 6 at 4 p m The next meeting of the Steering Committee will be Wednesday, October 6, at 4 00 p m , in the YPD training room located on the second floor of the Police and Legal Center, at 200 South Third Street.
