Since the signing of the Sister City Agreement in 1972, both cities of Yakima and Itayanagi have worked together to deepen our friendship through more than forty years of cultural exchanges. Over the years, we have enthusiastically developed various culturally educational exchange programs, such as acceptance of international exchange students, creative work exchange by elementary schools, and an intern program for the future successor of the farming industry, which helped both cities learn and connect through heart-to-heart communication. Furthermore, we started the junior high school summer program in 1989 and since then, over 450 students have participated in the program who are now pursuing their dreams and will always remember their experiences in their hearts. Twelve junior high school students from Itayanagi are participating in the program this year to further strengthen our sister -city relationship, accompanied by Mr. Koji Takahashi, Superintendent of Itayanagi City Board of Education. Our student participants are our greatest and most precious treasure as they will be the future of ltayanagi. I am certain that their experience in Yakima will help them tremendously in their personal growth and create an awareness of the importance of cultivating closer international relations. I would like to kindly thank you and your staff for your hospitality during their stay in Yakima. Japan's active role in international affairs in the recent years has prompted our school education system to help our students develop a global perspective, not only having the ability to speak another language, but to play an active part in communities with essential global knowledge and skills. I believe their exposure to international exchange will stimulate their growth towards a global society, improve their communication skills, and deepening their understanding because it gives them an opportunity to reflect on their own country and themselves again. It is important that we maintain the efforts of connection that our past generations have cultivated and continue to invest in the future of our youths by passing on this tradition. I hope that we will continue to share this path together to build an even better future. Please accept my best wishes for your continued health and success.
