AN ORDINANCE relating to vehicular and pedestrian traffic control;
providing for the establishment of, and regulating,
school crossings and diagonal pedestrian school cross-
ings; providing for the establishment of and designating
the authority of the schoolboy patrol; and amending
Sections 9.20.010 (b), 9.20.010 (e), 9.24.110 and
9.12.020 of the City of Yakima Municipal Code.
• BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
Section 1. Section 9.20.010 (b) of the City of Yakima Municipal
Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
"9.20.010 (b) The City Council may by resolution
establish school crossings at intersections in the vicinity
of schools where, in its opinion, crossing the roadway by
school children is dangerous, and such school crossings shall
be maintained and marked by paint or otherwise to show cross-
walks approximately 10 feet in width. The City Council may
further, by resolution, establish diagonal pedestrian school
crossings at intersections in the vicinity of schools where,
in its opinion, such such diagonal pedestrian crossings are
necessary for the safety and convenience of school students
and the general publ ic, which diagonal pedestrian school cross-
ings shall not be marked on the street surface unless required
by a resolution of the City CDunci I
Section 2. Section 9.20.010 (e) of the City of Yakima Municipal
Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
"9.20.010 (e) Appropriate signs shall be erected and
maintained indicating the aforementioned zones, traffic
lanes, one-way streets, school crossings, diagonal pedes-
trian school crossings and parking places, and the hours
during which such zones shall be kept open or deemed in
use."
Section 3. Section 9.24.110 of the City of Yakima Municipal Code
is hereby amended to read as follows:
"9.24.110 DUTIES - DIAGONAL CROSSING OF STREET
INTERSECTIONS. Pedestrians shall not cross street inter-
sections diagonally unless authorized by a traffic control
device or sign; and, when authorized to cross diagonally,
pedestrians shall cross only in accordance with such traffic
control device or sign."
Section 4. Section 9.12.020 of the City of Yakima Municipal Code
is hereby amended to read as follows:
"9. 1 2.020 ESTABLISHMENT AND AUTHORITY OF SCHOOL
• PATROL - VIOLATION. The Chief of Police of the City of
Yakima shall designate students appsinted wirliant to
applicable laws as members of the "School Patrol" who
sha l I wear a budge or nthcr apps cipr i ate insignia marred
"school patrol" when performing their duties, and who may
display "stop" or other traffic directional signs or signals
at school crossings and at other points designated by the
Chief of Police or other officer appointed by the Chief of
Police to be in charge of school patrols. Members of the
school patrol shall be subordinate to and obey the orders
of any police officer of the City of Yakima.

It shall be unlawful for the operator of any vehicle
to fail to stop his vehicle when directed to do so by a
school patrol sign or signal displayed by a member of the
school patrol engaged in the performance of his duty and
wearing or displaying appropriate insignia, and it shall
further be unlawful for the operator of a vehicle to dis-
regard any other reasonable directions of a member of the
school patrol when acting in performance of his duties as
such."
ill Section 5. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect
thirty days after its passage, approval and publication as provided
by law and by the City Charter.
