BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS
Arts Commission
Vacancies 1 -- Community Member (appointed by the City)
Vacancies 2 – Capitol Theatre and Symphony appointments (currently no one to
appoint)

Voting members shall include: 2 working artists; 4-6 Community members (of which 3
must be city residents—this requirement is currently met); 6 agency
representatives: Yakima Symphony, Capitol Theatre, Allied Arts, The Seasons, Larson
Gallery, Yakima Vall ey Museum. Duties:
A. Encouraging public art, establishing procedures for selection and
approval of art pieces, suggesting placement of public art and arranging for
ongoing maintenance of public art in public places throughout the City of
Yakima;
B. Advise and assist city departments, commissions, and committees, as
well as the City Council, regarding artistic components of all municipal
government projects under consideration by the city. The Commission may
also serve as a resource for artistic components of land use developments;
C. Develop relationships with existing organizations and community groups
having a stake and interest in good building and public space design and
development;
D. Encourage connections with regional, state, and national organizations
with an interest in art, artistic values, and similar goals;
E. Pursue gifts and grants available to the City of Yakima for the purposes
of cultural and artistic activities and enhancements of public spaces in the
City of Yakima;
F. Promote and engage in activities t hat enrich the lives of the City of
Yakima’s residents through artistic education and expression;
G. Work with existing arts organizations, community groups, and artists in
the delivery of programs and activities as well as assist in fostering
collaboration and stability; and,
H. Serve as a voluntary advisory resource for the aesthetic review of
private development.

Responsibilities: Adopts rules, administers merit principles governing the appointment,
promotion, transfer, lay-off, removal, discipline and welfare of the classified employees
other than Police and Fire.
Yakima Historic Preservation Commission

At least three professional with experience in identifying, evaluating and protecting
historic resources and are selected from among the disciplines of history, architecture,
architectural history, landscape architecture, historic preservation, planning, f olklore,
cultural anthropology, prehistoric and historic archaeology, American studies, curation,
traditional building crafts, the practice of historic rehabilitation or restoration, finance and
banking, law, and real estate, or related disciplines. Three members must be from
specific disciplines. (this requirement has currently been met) Must be a city
resident unless granted exception by Council.
SE Community Center

Melissa Furneaux—SECC Board Recommendation (city resident—also applied
for Community Review Board, which has no vacancies )
To make recommendations to the Operator and City regarding Management policies,
operations, maintenance, and capital improvement needs. Must be a city resident.
Appointed by: City Council based upon the recommendations of Operator (Board of
Directors).

Requirements: No commissioner of an authority may be an officer or employee of the
city or county.
Responsibilities: Development and operation of programs to provide improved housing
for low income families and individuals, throughout the City; and cooperation with other
agencies in neighborhood improvement programs, and provision of ho using for
displaced persons.
