Meeting was called to order at 5:06 p.m.
1. The CIEC observed a moment of silence to honor those who tragically lost their lives during
the terrorist attacks 16 years ago.
2. Brandy motioned to adopt the agenda.
a. Laura seconded the motion.
b. Unanimous approval.
3. Icebreaker: what are your plans for Fresh Hop?
a. Rachel, Brandy, Tiffany, Laura
4. Brandy motioned to approve the meeting minutes from 9/6/2017 with the name correction
on item 4.e.
a. Rachel seconded the motion.
b. Unanimous approval.
5. Old Business
a. Summary of experience at Viva la Musica
i. 15 surveys conducted by Anita and Laura
ii. Surveys face-to-face were not very effective, some participants seemed really
nervous and wanted to give the "right" answer.
iii. Participants did not really understand the concept of "integration."
iv. The level of education assumed in survey seemed too high.
v. Music was very loud and so it was difficult to connect/hear
vi. Random sampling door-to-door might be more effective
vii. Most participants did not know what district they lived in (intersection noted
on surveys to deteunine district later)
viii. Need to add "sometimes" as an option as an answer
ix. The survey was a good tool to understand what the barriers were; this may be
more useful than the data that was collected.
b. Discussion regarding survey trends, inclusion in final report
i. Present glaring trends, some data
ii. Include comments throughout final report
iii. Give feedback and observations regarding survey procedure
iv. Attach copy of survey to report
c. Action items regarding survey

i. Arthur will enter remaining surveys and send to Tiffany
ii. Tiffany will send flat data and send a summary of data with graphics to the
committee
6. New Business
a. Quarterly Report
i. Verbal report and slide show on 19th (opt to go second so Laura has better
chance of attending)
ii. Summary of where we've been, go into more detail about research
conducted, discuss the survey and explain that we're working on strategies.
Council should expect us on Oct. 17 with our final recommendations and
report.
iii. Arthur will send slide show to Laura for review as soon as possible
iv. Contact Randy so he knows to prepare for power point; Arthur arrange to
print copies for Council
Permanent Community Integration Committee structure
i. Diversity parameters inclusive: ethnic, linguistic, socioeconomic, sexual
orientation (bilingual applicants encouraged)
ii. Number of members

comfortable, and where people speak Spanish (clinics, La Casa, etc.)

vii. Staff requirements (what skillset is needed?)
c. Brainstormed strategies to apply an integration lens on policy making in Yakima
i. CIC conducts surveys to pulse community on proposed policy changes,
issues, etc.
ii. CIC acts as integration and inclusion "experts" to review policies and give a
report or recommendation to City Council.
iii. CIC receives cultural competency training and is encouraged to interact with
and learn from committees from other communities
d. Brainstormed strategies for increased community education and outreach
i. CIC encourages increased community communication strategies, target
neighborhoods (press releases, media contacts, increase in social media

presence) in order to communicate proposed changes, opportunities, city
events (e.g. letters to residents, city newsletter, conducting surveys)
ii. CIC helps host small community forums (district specific) by advertising and
coordinating the community forum and helping to educate residents about
what district they live in.
iii. CIC maintains district specific contacts database for community
partners/resources.
iv. CIC could adopt a "community health workers strategy" (culturally
competent, local sub -group that is trained in what's going on in the
community) could be an expensive resource.
e. Brainstormed strategies for increased sense of belonging.
