Mike Merryman, GFI Director Dave Zabell, Assistant City Manager Michael Morales, Director of Community and Economic Development Tammy Regimbal, CED Office Administrator • Kathy Coffey welcomed the steering committee and led the introductions. • Review initial GFI proposal: Lt. Merryman reviewed the Gang Free Initiative Proposal and gave a brief background on the initiative. He emphasized that the City of Yakima through the Yakima City Council has given the GFI Steering Committee authority to act. He talked briefly about suppression, prevention and intervention methods and will provide additional information about the definitions of each at the next meeting. Council Member Lover urged consideration of a fourth method which he termed "re- entry," i.e. deciding to leave a gang. He remarked that it is an area that would require special care. Review organizational chart: Lt. Merryman noted that there are still openings on the steering committee. Suggestions for youth members are welcome and can be emailed to Lt. Merryman or Kathy Coffey. GFI Coordinator proposals received: August 2nd was the deadline for Requests for Qualifications for the Coordinator position. Seven proposals were received. The city Purchasing Division will evaluate the proposals. Those that meet the established criteria will be forwarded for review by a selection committee. A 3 -5 member selection committee will be chosen. Discuss sub - committee chairs and members: Lt. Merryman led a discussion of the sub- committee structure and the draft implementation plans. Members were encouraged to read through the material and to consider either chairing or serving on one of the sub - committees. Additional community members can also serve on sub - committees. The sub- committees will report to the steering committee who will report to the Council. Setting benchmarks and measuring outcomes will be necessary and critical to the process. Responsibilities of the GFI Committee members: Dick Zais briefed the Committee on public disclosure requirements. Safe Streets: Dick Zais gave a status report of Yakima's request for assistance to the FBI's Safe Streets program. U.S. Attorney for Eastern Washington James McDevitt leads the program in our region. The city expects an answer within the next 45 days. The next meeting of the Steering Committee will be Wednesday, August 11 at 8:30 a.m., in the YPD training room located on the second floor of Police and Legal Center, at 200 South Third Street. ub- committees will be the focus of the meeting. frA Kathy •o -y - GFI Steering Committ-e ha r •
